Quality standards for water

One of the key elements of the WFD is the implementation of a combined approach of emission limit values and quality standards (for waters, sediments and biota), and also the phasing out of particularly hazardous substances. Accordingly, a list of 33 priority substances, which represent a significant risk to the aquatic environment at community level, was established. For the first time two surfactant metabolites, namely NP and OP, have been included in this priority list. [Pg.959]

Analytical methods and specifications must be established and validated so as to define and control the quality and purity of the raw materials, intermediates and the finished product. For many standard chemical raw materials, the development of specifications will not be necessary as they are already published in US and European pharmacopoeia (for example, standards for water, organic solvents and various excipients). The ultimate objective of these activities is to be able to manufacture the drugs required for clinical trials in accordance with good manufacturing practice (GMP). [Pg.68]

Because of the great importance of drinking water for human health, quality standards for pesticides in water were developed at Community level based on the precautionary principle. Toxicological considerations were not taken into account to derive the general limit for pesticides. [Pg.19]

Regarding the maximum legislated levels of these compounds, the European Council has recently adopted the Directive 2008/105/CE [57] which sets quality standards for the 33 priority pollutants in surface waters. For sediments, however, there are no legislative limits in Europe and to accomplish the legislation it is only necessary to show an improvement in concentration over the previous year s level. [Pg.144]

Drinking water intended for human consumption is the most protected foodstuff worldwide and thus many national and international regulations have been introduced to assure a safe drinking water supply. In general, drinking water must be of a quality that under no circumstances would present a hazard to human health. In many countries, such as Germany, standards for water resources that may be used for drinking water production are specified [1]. [Pg.792]

Wastewater pretreaters that discharge water into sewer systems have new requirements. Pollutant standards for sewage sludge have been set. Toxics in the water must be identified and plans must be developed to alleviate any problems. In addition, regulators have established, and continue to establish, water-quality standards for priority toxic pollutants. [Pg.121]
