From the standpoint of thermodynamics, the dissolving process is the estabHsh-ment of an equilibrium between the phase of the solute and its saturated aqueous solution. Aqueous solubility is almost exclusively dependent on the intermolecular forces that exist between the solute molecules and the water molecules. The solute-solute, solute-water, and water-water adhesive interactions determine the amount of compound dissolving in water. Additional solute-solute interactions are associated with the lattice energy in the crystalline state. [Pg.495]

The Bucher-Guyer horizontal rotary press is a highly automated batch process machine that requires no press aid. The press consists of a horizontal hydrauhc ram inside a rotating cylinder containing many flexible rods covered with a knitted synthetic fabric. The rods have serrated surfaces to allow juice which passes through the fabric to flow to the discharge ends. Hydrauhc pressure is apphed for a preset time, the ram is retracted, and the cylinder is rotated to break up the press cake. This cycle is repeated several times before the press cake is removed from the cylinder and the press is cleaned (16). Juice yield for this horizontal rotary press is 84% with secondary water addition it is increased to 92% (15). [Pg.572]

A belt press commonly uses two belts of woven material. Fmit mash is deposited on, and spread out evenly between, the two belts which converge and press the mash between them. The belts wrap around a series of successively smaller cylinders or pass between rollers (less efficient) for the pressing action. Covers for the battery designs in Figures 1 and 2 are typically molded from materials identical to that of the respective case, and vent plugs are frequentiy made of molded polypropylene. Other combinations are possible, eg, containers molded of polyethylene or polypropylene may be mated with covers of high impact mbber for use in industrial batteries. After the cover is fitted over the terminal post, it is sealed onto the case. The cover is heat bonded to the case, if it is plastic it is sealed with an epoxy resin or other adhesive, if it is vulcanized mbber. Vent caps are usually inserted into the cover s acid fiU holes to faciHtate water addition and safety vent gasses, except for nonaccessible maintenance-free or recombinant batteries. Catalyst contamination from sources such as turbine lubricant and boiler feed water additives is usuaUy much more severe than deactivation by sulfur compounds in the turbine exhaust. Catalyst formulation can be adjusted to improve poison tolerance, but no catalyst is immune to a contaminant that coats its surface and prevents access of CO to the active sites.
