The Control of Pollution (Special Waste) Regulations 1980 were implemented under the Control of Pollution Act 1974. Hazardous waste was defined through toxicity criteria and the concentration of chemicals or substances. It retained the need (from the Deposit of Poisonous Waste Act 1972) to pre-notify the waste regulation authorities before moving special waste to pre-determined disposal sites. [Pg.22]

In certain countries the regulative authorities require separation of solid and liquid radioactive waste. Until recently this separation has been done manually, but now there are mechanical devices on purpose. [Pg.107]

Disposal of asbestos waste is subject to the Hazardous Waste Regulations which require it to be consigned to an authorized asbestos waste site only. The waste container must be strong enough to securely contain the waste and not become punctured it must be easily decontaminated, kept securely on the site until required and properly labelled. The waste producer or holder should ensure that waste is only transferred to an authorised person such as a Waste Collection Authority (WCA) or a Waste Disposal Authority in Scotland, a holder of a waste managemenf licence (or someone who is exempt from holding a licence) or a registered carrier of confrolled waste (or someone who is exempt from registration). The EPA replaced previous controls in the Control of Pollution Act 1974. It introduced changes in both the waste management licensing system and the bodies responsible for waste regulation and disposal.
