Warfarin Foods high in vitamin K Decreases anticoagulant response... 

Identify and analyze warfarin drug-drug and drug-food interactions. 

Inform patient about the effects of vitamin K-rich foods on warfarin therapy. Moderate intake (less than 500 to 1000 meg) of vitamin K is acceptable. Provide patient with written material regarding vitamin K content of foods. 

Warfarin is a K-vitamin antagonist used to decrease blood clothing and reduce risk of thrombosis. Warfarin has a narrow therapeutic interval. Food with a high K-vitamin content such as green leaf vegetables, strawberries, liver etcetera counteract the Warfarin effects. 

A field trial was conducted using 0.005% bromethalin bait against a resistant population of house mice in a poultry house. Resistance had been verified by using the standard WHO laboratory procedure. About two-thirds of the mice tested were resistant to warfarin. Control was achieved under extremely difficult conditions (i.e., extremely large population with an abundant food supply in a complex physical environment). 

Drug/Food interactions Vitamin K-rich vegetables may decrease the anticoagulant effects of warfarin by interfering with absorption. Minimize consumption of vitamin K-rich foods (eg, spinach, seaweed, broccoli, turnip greens) or nutritional supplements. Mango has been shown to increase warfarin s effect.

Some chemical exposures may be hepatic enzyme inducers/inhibitors, altering the effects of drugs like warfarin. Some foods such as mono-amines, will cause reactions in patients given MAOIs grapefruit juice may interact with terfenadine and some other drugs. New diseases may cause problems heart failure causing reduced liver blood flow can reduce the metabolism of drugs like warfarin.
