Vulcanized mechanical properties

Rubber. The mbber industry consumes finely ground metallic selenium and Selenac (selenium diethyl dithiocarbamate, R. T. Vanderbilt). Both are used with natural mbber and styrene—butadiene mbber (SBR) to increase the rate of vulcanization and improve the aging and mechanical properties of sulfudess and low sulfur stocks. Selenac is also used as an accelerator in butyl mbber and as an activator for other types of accelerators, eg, thiazoles (see Rubber chemicals). Selenium compounds are useflil as antioxidants (qv), uv stabilizers, (qv), bonding agents, carbon black activators, and polymerization additives. Selenac improves the adhesion of polyester fibers to mbber. [Pg.337]

Natural rubber was the only polymer for elastomer production until the advent of synthetics. Natural rubber, however, continues to maintain its competitive edge due mainly to the gain in properties such as high resilience, low hysteresis, low heat buildup, and excellent tack with mechanical properties achieved through the process of vulcanization [114-115]. Improvement in the solvent and oil resistance of rubbers can be achieved via grafting of acrylonitrile onto rubber [140-142] and rubber blends [143]. Ha [29] has shown that in PP-HDPE (of high-den-sity PE) dynamically cured EPDM, the cured EPDM act as a compatibilizer to the HDPE-PP system. Blending was done in two ways. EPDM was cured first and then blended with PP and HDPE. In the second case, EPDM was cured in the presence of PP and HDPE using dicu-myl peroxide (DCP) as the vulcanizing agent. In EPDM-rich composition, mechanical properties were increased by increasing the concentration of DCP, whereas in PP-rich composition, the reverse was the case. [Pg.640]

Dynamic vulcanization as a method to improve the mechanical properties of NR-PE blends has been discussed in detail by Choudhary et al. [30]. Rubber diaphragms, made up of fluorosilicone mbbers, can be reinforced using aramid fiber in order to impart better mechanical properties to the composite, though surface modification of the fiber is needed to improve the adhesion between fluorosUicone mbber and the fiber [35]. Improvement in the processing and vulcanized qualities of a range of systems have been reported over the past decades. Modification of natural rubber, due to work in the British Rubber Producers Research Association, yields some of the most striking applications of microgel. The analysis of vulcanizates physical-mechanical properties testifies, that with the increase of ZnCFO contents increase the tensile strength, hardness, resilience elongation at break and residual deformation at compression on 20 %. That is, ZnCFO is effective component of given vulcanization systems, as at equal-mass replacement of known zinc oxide (5,0 phr) the cure rate, the concentration of crosslink bonds are increased and general properties complex of rubber mixes and their vulcanizates is improved. [Pg.197]

Similar results were obtained by shear blending of two synthetic elastomers (45). The formation of a block or graft copolymer during the process of mixing butadiene rubber (SKB) and styrene-containing rubber (SKS-30A) was postulated by Slonimskii and Reztsova (49). They claimed that the anomalies observed in the dependences on composition of the mechanical properties of a mixture of two mutually insoluble rubbers after vulcanization may be reduced by increasing the part played by the mechanical mixing (inert atmosphere, reduction of radical acceptors, intensity of mechanical action). [Pg.32]
