Western blot A method to detect protein in a given sample of tissue homogenate or extract. It uses gel electrophoresis to separate denatured proteins by mass. Some diagnostic applications for the Western blot include Lyme disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (it is considered the gold standard for HIV diagnostic testing).

Sample preparation. All allantoic fluid of chicken embryos or calf serum used in experiments contained influenza virus (104—106 EID50/ml). The samples of biological fluids underwent photodynamic treatment as described above. One milliliter aliquots were taken before treatment and at 3 and 6 h after the start of experiment. To analyze the effect of photodynamic treatment on proteins we used alkaline denaturing electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and P-mercaptoethanol (P-ME).

TISEMIJS, ARNE W. K. (1902-1971). A Swedish biochemist who won the Nobel prize for chemistry in 1948, for his research on electrophoresis and adsorption analysis, especially for his discoveries concerning the complex nature of the serum proteins. His work also involved virus isolation and synthesis of blood plasma. He earned degrees from die University of Uppsala and Princeton University, as well as a multitude of honorary degrees.
