There was thus obtained a mixture of Veratrum viride alkaloids having substantial utility as a hypertension reducing agent, without the concomitant marked side-actions normally associated with the clinical use of Veratrum viride extracts. The constitution of a number of alkaloids has not as yet been definitely established. Among these are aconitine from aconite, delphinine from larkspur, jervine and protojervine from veratrum viride, cevadine from sabadilla seed, lobeline from lobelia, the curare alkaloids from Chondro-dendron tomentosum, sanguinarine from sanguinaria, and many others.

You can also prepare your own plant extract, as in the reference below. Use a plant species that herbivores avoid snch as spurges Euphorbia spp.) or false hellebore Veratrum viride). Separate plant parts such as leaves, stems, and roots. Grind plant parts separately with ethyl acetate in a blender. (In onr work, we extracted 60 g of roots of Euphorbia lathyris with 2(X)-ml ethyl acetate. For about 300 g plant tops we used 400-nil ethyl acetate.) Filter the extract, discard the plant tissue.

The rhizome and root of Veratmm album (white hellebore) and the rhizome of Veratrum viride (green hellebore) contain many alkaloids, including hypotensive ester alkaloids and jervine. Veratrum califomicum contains the alkaloids cyclopamine, cycloposine, and jervine.

Veratrum alkaloids are produced by lilaceous plants of the suborder Melanthaceae of which Veratrum album, the hellebore of Europe and northern Asia, Veratrum viride, the swamp hellebore or Indian poke of North America, and Schoenocaulon officinale of Central and South America are the best known. The latter yields the sabadilla seed which was used as an insecticide by Indians in pre-Columbian times (Crosby 1971). The alkaloid fraction of the seeds, often termed veratrine, is a poorly defined mixture mostly of the ester alkaloids, veratridine, and cevadine and of the alkamine veracevine or its isomer cevine.
