The 1 P-amino-2a,3 p,5 p-trihydroxycycloheptane (32), recently isolated from Physalis alkekengi w.francheti [50], may be a biosynthetic precursor to the calystegines which occur in this plant. Alternatively, the compound could result from enzymic reduction of the 5-aminocycloheptanone tautomer (33) of calystegine A, (15) and thus be a termination point of the biosynthetic process, providing little useful information as to the origin of the alkaloids. [Pg.328]
