These data about the effect of dietary protein and calcium loss are consistent with epidemiological evidence linking diet and bone calcium loss. Walker, et al. (6) reported fracture rates ten times greater among white South Africans eating a meat-rich European type diet than among the local Bantu who consumed a vegetarian diet. [Pg.87]

There is evidence that adherence to a vegetarian diet reduces the incidence of some types of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The possible mechanisms by which some of the components of these and other diets may have a beneficial effect are given in Table 15.9. [Pg.360]

Six subjects who were participants in a study on effects of several purified fibers on nutrient utilization and who were vegetarians were age, sex, height, weight and ethnic-group matched with six subjects from this series of studies who were omnivores. The laboratory-controlled diet fed to all subjects for 21-28 days was a lacto-vegetarlan type. The basal diet provided 10.10 mg of zinc and 14.7 g of fiber. Cellulose, hemi-cellulose or pectin were added to the basal diet to provide 20 g fiber/day in separate, randomly arranged period of 6 to 7 days each. [Pg.121]

Nutrition should be low in copper. Patients must avoid foodstuffs and beverages containing copper, e. g. edible offal, nuts, cocoa products, mushrooms, potato crisps, rye flour, oat flakes, beans, dried figs, certain types of cheese, meat and fish, pineapple, mineral water (see relevant lists as to the composition of foodstuffs and copper content in food). Vegetarian food, from which copper cannot be easily mobilized, is therefore recommended. Cooking utensils containing copper should not be used. Alcohol is strictly forbidden. [Pg.615]

Many people, including myself, begin as ovo-lacto vegetarians but eventually become vegans, considered the most complete or pure type. [Pg.360]

Perhaps the most common objection to any type of vegetarianism comes from a misconception about deficiencies in the diet, particularly protein. But it... [Pg.360]

In addition to the types of food and drinks ingested, specific food-related situations will also influence plasma composition. They include vegetarianism, obesity, malnutrition, fasting, and starvation. [Pg.454]

As shown in Table IV, even though the omnivore subjects continued to receive an omnivore-type diet, these subjects had no significantly better hemoglobin, hematocrit, or blood serum iron levels than did the vegetarian subjects who received the closely matched controlled diet in which meat and fish were replaced by soy products. [Pg.193]

The evaluation of lead intakes from diet was realised in the Slovak Republic in two types of total diet (ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet and non-vegetarian standard diet) collected from the kindergartens in Bratislava (capital of Slovakia) in 1991-1994 (Table 15). The results of median weekly intakes represented 27% of the PTWI in non-vegetarian children and 40% in vegetarian children. The authors did not find... [Pg.123]

The risk of iodine deficiency in vegetarians reflects the extent to which iodine-containing foods are excluded from their diets. For example, those who adhere to highly restricted diets are more likely to suffer deficiency than others who consume dairy products, which are generally iodine-rich. Thus, to consider the likely prevalence of iodine deficiency in vegetarians, it is necessary to consider the nature and severity of individual dietary restrictions. However, the scientific and popular literature have adopted an array of variable and sometimes overlapping nomenclature to describe various types of vegetarian diets (Dwyer et al., 1974 Johnston, 2000 Weinsier, 2000). In order to standardize our discussion and enhance comparability between the studies considered below, we have adopted the dietary terms and definitions outfined in Tables 54.1 and 54.2, respectively. [Pg.522]

It is adequate to provide the population with a nutritionally acceptable, but mainly vegetarian, diet. If the populace were given the free choice of the types of food they would tike to consume, including some animal proteins, this may not be entirely tme. [Pg.9]
