Vegetarianism children

The evaluation of lead intakes from diet was realised in the Slovak Republic in two types of total diet (ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet and non-vegetarian standard diet) collected from the kindergartens in Bratislava (capital of Slovakia) in 1991-1994 (Table 15). The pickiness began when I was a child, but the first time I made a food choice for reasons other than personal taste, I was thirteen. At a friend s house, I watched Faces of Death, a documentary comprised of footage showing real deaths of all kinds. The slaughterhouse scene killed me. The next day, I became a vegetarian. 

A 6-month-old child was breast-fed exclusively by a mother who had been a strict vegetarian for at least 7 years. He was totally unresponsive to stimuli. His hemoglobin was 5.7 g/dL, and his bone marrow aspirates showed megaloblastic changes in blood cells. His serum folate and iron were normal. His urine contained increased amounts of homocystine, methylmalonic acid, and glycine. Propose a reason for this infant s illness, and discuss its biochemical etiology. Discuss other possible reasons for the same or similar symptoms in a patient. Explain the abnormal serum and urine chemistries.

Vegetarian diets need to be carefully monitored when they are fed to young children. Soy milk is not appropriate under 1 year of age. When soy milk is used later in childhood, especially if the child is a vegan, it should be fortified with vitamins D and B12 and calcium.
