ROPE has been demonstrated for its tar sand applications in field-level studies. Western Research Institute claimed that ROPE technology could be applied to oil-contaminated dirt, tires, petroleum bottoms, oil shale, and tar sand and noted that the process could potentially remove volatile metals such as mercury from soils. Hydrocarbon Technologies, Inc., intends to develop the technology only for tire recycling. The ROPE process has not been tested at a commercial level. [Pg.669]

Finally, a recent study was undertaken to assess the human and environmental hazard of recycled tire crumb as ground covering in playgrounds (Birkholz et al., 2003). Here, the PEEP scale was called upon to estimate hazard associated with aquatic exposure to water-soluble extracts of tire crumbs. Based on an initially-determined PEEP value of 3.2 for projected volumes of tire crumb leachates to the aquatic environment and a documented decrease in toxicity three months after tire crumb cover had been in place, the study concluded that tires recycled in this fashion would not present a significant risk of contamination for either receiving surface or groundwaters. [Pg.85]

Ballistic materials have been designed to ensure protection against bullet or artillery impact there are some commercial examples of such materials that use natural latex rubber [110], with recycled rubber as the main component to obtain highly dense and durable blocks and panels [111] or tire recycled rubber [112,113]. Other producers are Cumberland Rubber Supply [114], which offers materials with high strength, elasticity, and durability BRICO Black Iron Rubber Company [115] Super Trap [116] and Rubber Sheet Roll [117]. [Pg.88]
