Varieties of PES

In this section, a few related varieties of poly(ethersulfone) are briefly described. These varieties include  [Pg.251]

PTKs can be produced by causing an alkali metal sulfide and a 4,4 -di-halobenzophenone to undergo a dehalogenation and sulfurization reaction in an organic amide solvent. However, PTKs involve problems when they are processed by extrusion and subsequent stretching or sheet forming. [Pg.251]

It is difficult from the technical viewpoint to apply these forming and processing methods to these materials. This problem is attributed to the formation of coarse spherulites in a product formed by the extrusion owing to the high crystallization rate. [Pg.251]

In contrast to PTK materials, the addition of sulfone groups to the polymer minimize the problems. When a 4,4 -dihalobenzophenone as a di-halogenated aromatic compound is combined with a 4,4 -dihalodiphenyl sulfone followed by their reaction with an alkali metal sulfide, an aromatic thioether ketone/thioether sulfone random copolymer can be obtained with a high molecular weight. [Pg.251]

The thioether ketone/thioether sulfone copolymer exhibits a reduced crystallinity and a high melting point, but a glass transition temperature higher than that of the corresponding PTK. When proportion of the 4,4 -di-halobenzophenone to the 4,4 -dihalodiphenyl sulfone is selectively limited to a specific range, a copolymer moderately reduced in crystallization rate can be obtained in the form of granules. [Pg.251]

Gross-Linking. A variety of PE resins, after their synthesis, can be modified by cross-linking with peroxides, hydrolysis of silane-grafted polymers, ionic bonding of chain carboxyl groups (ionomers), chlorination, graft copolymerization, hydrolysis of vinyl acetate copolymers, and other reactions. [Pg.369]

Theoretical studies of PO have been carried out recently by Mulliken and Liu,283 who obtained a wavefunction close to the Hartree-Fock limit. An investigation of the Rydberg states has also been reported.335 The first calculations using Cl were those of Tseng and Grein,386 who have studied a variety of PE curves for the low-lying 2II, 4II, 2E+, 2S, 4S-, 2A, and 2fl> states. A minimal STO basis and full valence-shell Cl were used. The relative positions of the states agree well with experiment, and several predictions were made for as yet unobserved states. [Pg.122]

Determine the yield of a second order reaction, A -F B — prodnct with ai = bm in an isothermal tubular reactor governed by the axial dispersion model. Specifically, plot fraction unreacted versus aiJd for a variety of Pe. Be sure to show the limiting cases that correspond to a PER and a CSTR. [Pg.354]

The two varieties of PE generally used for corrosive applications are EHMW and UHMW. Polyethylene exhibits a wide range of corrosion resistance, ranging from potable water to corrosive wastes. It is resistant to most mineral acids, including sulfuric up to 70% concentrations, inorganic salts including chlorides, alkalies, and many organic acids. It is not resistant to bromine, aromatics, or chlorinated hydrocarbons. Refer to Table 2.27 for... [Pg.92]

The work on Z-N-type catalysts in DuPont Canada in Kingston resulted in a low-pressure solution technology, SCLAIRTECH , based on a new coordination catalyst (Elston 1972, filed 1968). The process made it possible to copolymerize C2 with 10-20 mol% of C4, Ce, or Cg olefins. The SCLAIRTECH provides greater variety of PE properties than the standard Z-N-type process, ranging from HOPE to that of LLDPE. The density and crystallinity depend on the type, amount, and sequence of placement of a comonomer. Owing to excellent performance parameters, these resins are used for films and fibers as well as for gas pipelines. A full-scale production facility near Sarnia, ON, was built in the early 1960s (Lank and Williams 1982). [Pg.1565]

According to the classical theory of plasticity, indentation hardness for a Vickers indenter is approximately equal to three times the 5deld stress measured in frictionless compression, Yc (1). However, recent data evidence that the theory fails when dealing with polymers (24). Indeed, hardness-to-compressive yield stress ratios of H Yc 2 have been found for various chain-folded and chain-extended PE samples due to the nonnegligible elastic strains of the indented material (24). On the other hand, hardness-to-tensile yield stress ratios of HfYt >= 3 have been obtained on a wide variety of PE samples, provided the strain rate of the tensile test is comparable to that employed in the hardness test (24,25). [Pg.3638]

A computational algorithm for generating and modeling polymer particles for our simulations was developed to construct particles that are as similar as possible to the experimentally created polymer particles. We have examined a variety of PE nano-scale particles, allowing the systematic study of size-dependent physical properties of these particles [214]. The models have been well tested and shown to provide realistic representation of the structure and vibrational spectroscopy of a number of polymer systems harmonic/Morse potentials for the bond stretches, harmonic potential for bending between two bonds, a truncated... [Pg.50]

There is a variety of PE experiments two-pulse PE (2PE), three-pulse PE (3PE), accumulated PE (APE), incoherent PE (IPE), etc. In every type of PE, after several pulses applied to the sample we measure a spontaneously emerging coherent echo pulse. Let us consider for example 2PE [15,18]. [Pg.129]

Precipitation with PE requires inexpensive chemicals in small amounts, only the amount of PE required to neutrahze the protein charge. Thus, the method is suitable for large-scale processing and for dealing with dilute solutions. A variety of PE have been tried out, but the same cannot be said of polyampholytes, which are PE capable of acquiring both positive and negative charges. [Pg.252]

Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) is a variety of photoelectron spectroscopy that is aimed at measuring the valence band, as described in sectionBl.25.2.3. Valence band spectroscopy is best perfonned with photon energies in the range of 20-50 eV. A He discharge lamp, which can produce 21.2 or 40.8 eV photons, is commonly used as the excitation source m the laboratory, or UPS can be perfonned with synchrotron radiation. Note that UPS is sometimes just referred to as photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), or simply valence band photoemission. [Pg.308]

The gradient of the PES (force) can in principle be calculated by finite difference methods. This is, however, extremely inefficient, requiring many evaluations of the wave function. Gradient methods in quantum chemistiy are fortunately now very advanced, and analytic gradients are available for a wide variety of ab initio methods [123-127]. Note that if the wave function depends on a set of parameters X], for example, the expansion coefficients of the basis functions used to build the orbitals in molecular orbital (MO) theory. [Pg.267]

Polymerization in Solution or Slurry. Many hydrocarbon solvents dissolve PE at elevated temperatures of 120—150°C. Polymerization reactions in solution requite, as theit last step, the stripping of solvent. A variety of catalysts can be used in these processes. [Pg.368]

Muramyl tripeptide phosphatidylethanolamine (MTP-PE), a synthetic analogue of muramyl dipeptide and an effective systemic macrophage activator, induces a variety of cytokines such as IL-1, IL-6, and TNE, as well as PGE2 (205). Preirradiation treatment of mice using MTP-PE encapsulated in Hposomes, which can intensify radioprotective abiHty, stimulates the monocyte/macrophage system and accelerates the recovery of hemopoietic cells. [Pg.496]

Matsui and Mochida24) have determined the thermodynamic stabilities (log 1 /Kd) for a- and P-cyclodextrin complexes with a variety of alcohols (Table 2) and analyzed the results in connection with the physicochemical properties of the guest molecules by the multivariate technique. The log 1/Kd values were plotted against log Pe, where Pe is the partition coefficient of alcohol in a diethyl ether-water system. The plots for the a- and P-cyclodextrin complexes with eight 1-alkanols gave approximately straight lines with slopes of around one. [Pg.69]

A great variety of polyolefin separator types are now used in Li ion batteries. They must be stable in the organic electrolytes. Typically they may not be properly wetted by the electrolytes of the optimized composition, e. g., mixtures with PC, PE, and others. Therefore some proprietary treatments are needed to provide hydrophilic behavior. Generally, a micro-porous nonwoven morphology with a large surface gives a good wettability. [Pg.72]

As reviewed within each one of the major classes of plastics (PE, PVC, PC, etc.) there are usually a very wide variety of specific formulations, each of which has slightly different properties and/or processing capabilities at various costs. Prices, too, will tend to vary depending upon the supplier, the current state of the market, and the volume of plastic that the processor is prepared to purchase. [Pg.412]

The extent of short-chain branching in PE may be quantitatively determined by a variety of techniques including IR. 1 pyrolysis Ct., 7" and y-radiolysis."84 The most definitive information comes from l3C NMR studies.2S5"2 0 The typical... [Pg.208]
