Valley dam

Sampling in valley dams over 10 m high is carried out at several predetermined points (profiles) from a boat. Marking of the sampling points by anchored buoys simplifies position fixing. Zonal sampling should be performed to follow the stratification and motion of in-flow water in reservoirs. [Pg.286]

An arch dam, on the other hand, relies on its shape to withstand the pressure of the water behind it. The arch curves back upstream and the force exerted by the water is transferred through the dam into the river valley walls and to the river floor. They are normally constructed in deep gorges where the geological foundations are veiy sound. The United States s Hoover Dam is an example of a concrete arch dam. [Pg.648]

Rivers transport suspended sediments derived from the disintegration of basin surface layers. With reduced velocity, sediment is deposited in the river channel. The finest material is carried to the sea. It has been estimated that the average mechanical denudation rate for continents is 0.056 mm year (35). This is based on a total suspended load of 13.5 x 10 metric tons year (S). Presently, about two-thirds of the world s total suspended sediment load derives from Southern Asia and large Pacific Islands. Berner has estimated the increase in sediment loss in the U.S. and world since prehuman times to be approximately 200% (35). Current estimated erosion rate from the major land forms is provided in Table I. The relatively recent construction of large sediment trapping dams that normally caused sediment to be deposited in river valleys or transported to the ocean has drastically reduced sediment yields in great rivers. [Pg.251]

C14-0117. The notion of thermodynamic coupling of a nonspontaneous process with a spontaneous process is not restricted to chemical reactions. Identify the spontaneous and nonspontaneous portions of the following coupled processes (a) Water behind a dam passes through a turbine and generates electricity, (b) A gasoline engine pumps water from a valley to the top of a hill. [Pg.1041]

The climate of the Nile Valley was stable and predictable prior to the construction of the Aswan high dam. Although the effects of annual inundations were removed with the construction of the dam, the ensuing climatic changes ushered in a new set of phenomena that threaten the Nile Basin and its people, from Alexandria to Aswan. Our investigations (to be published) indicate that, because of overall increased irrigation, this threat now extends as far south as Khartoum. [Pg.286]

In tlie spring of 1889, unusually heavy rains caused die water level of die lake to rise, wliich caused die dam to rupture on May 31. A wall of water 40 feet liigh crashed down into die valley and die city. Tlie lake drained at a rate of... [Pg.5]

During this period, Wilson Dam was built on the Tennessee River at Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to furnish the power needed for the production of synthetic ammonia by the Haber process. This project was undertaken to insure a domestic source of nitrates for producing munitions and fertilizers. When the Tennessee Valley Authority was organized in 1933, the dam and facilities became a part of the Authority and thus the National Fertilizer Development Center at Muscle Shoals was born. [Pg.528]
