As pointed out in the Frontiers in Chemical Engineering report [16], Chapter 7, the (super)computer of the future will have enough power to allow ab initio computations that we are learning how to pose to replace laboratory experiments. To perform this analysis step, we need to be able to set up and solve very large scale computations. We might ask how well we can do this and what the problems are. [Pg.510]

Chromatographers and chemical engineers use different values for the equilibrium constant, K. The definitions are the same in both fields. The equilibrium constant is the ratio of the equilibrium concentrations of the solute under study in the two phases of the system. However, chromatographers generally report concentrations as the mass of solute per unit volume of the phase considered, whether liquid or solid, with the result that the equilibrium constant is dimensionless. By contrast, chemical engineers report liquid phase concentrations as the mass of solute per unit volume of the liquid phase but solid (or rather adsorbed... [Pg.61]

In this chapter, we summarize MOO applications in all areas of chemical engineering reported in journal publications from 2000 until mid 2007. This period is chosen so that it overlaps very slightly with the earlier, comprehensive review of Bhaskar et al. (2000a). Every effort is taken to include all reported MOO applications of chemical engineering in journals, in this chapter. Conference publications are not included in this summary for two reasons their limited availability, and conference publications are often expanded and later published in journals. Figure 2.1 shows the trend of journal publications on MOO applications in chemical engineering from the year 2000 to mid 2007. Note that the number of publications in the year 2007 is for about half of the year only. [Pg.28]

In what follows, we describe and summarize research on multi-objective optimization in chemical engineering reported in Hakanen (2006) and Haka-nen et al. (2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2007). These studies have focused on offering chemical engineering an efficient and practical way of handling all the necessary aspects of the problem, that is, to be able to simultaneously consider several conflicting objective functions that affect the behaviour of the problem considered. Therefore, they have been solved using the interactive NIMBUS method. [Pg.171]
