Suppositories and pessaries— These are preparations intended for either rectal or vaginal administration of drugs. They are formulated with a suitable base that melts at body temperature. 

Xue et al. [30] prepared a vaginal suppository formulation containing miconazole nitrate and determined its content by P-matrix ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The production of the suppository was finished with melting by the excipient of glyceryl esters fatty acid of artificial synthesis. Quantitative assay was conducted with a P-matrix ultraviolet spectrophotometer. The suppository was smooth and met the clinical requirement of vaginal disease treatment. The method of assay was accurate. 

H. Suppositories Solid preparations which melt at body temperature delivering medication for at-site treatment or for absorption at that point (usually rectal, vaginal, or urethral). Excipients include cocoa butter, waxy fatty acids, and derivatives, polyethylene glycol, theobroma oil, as well as many ingredients found in G. 

Included in the FDA Inactive Ingredients Guide (oral suspensions, tablets ophthalmic, rectal, and topical preparations transdermal preparations, vaginal suppositories). Included in nonparenteral medicines licensed in Europe. Included in the Canadian Eist of Acceptable Non-medicinal Ingredients. 

Miconazole nitrute is supplied in a variety of dosage fonns (cream, lotion, powder, and spray) for the treatment of tinea infections and cuiiineous candidiasis. Vaginal creams and. suppositories are also available for the treatment of vaginal candidiasis. A conceiiiraiion of 2% of the salt is u.sed in moii topical preparations. 

Terconazole and butoconazole Terconazole is a ketal triazole with structural similarities to ketoconazole. The mechanism of action of terconazole is similar to that of the imidazoles. The 80-mg vaginal suppository is inserted at bedtime for 3 days, whereas the 0.4% vaginal cream is used for 7 days, and the 0.8% cream for 3 days. Clinical efficacy and patient acceptance of both preparations are at least as good as for clotrimazole in patients with vaginal candidiasis. Butoconazole is an imidazole that is pharmacologically quite comparable to clotrimazole.

Recently, some effervescent systems have been prepared that act as penetration enhancers for drug absorption, not only in oral forms but also in some topical forms, such as skin or vaginal applications. In these cases the reaction takes place directly after administration, in the mouth due to saliva (4), upon the wounds due to blood serum (5), or when formulated in a suppository. The effervescence can be provoked by the moisture of the vaginal mucosa to treat vaginal infections or by simply adjusting the pH.

Pimaricin has been used as a vaginal suppository for the therapy of Candida infections and for other medical purposes like ophthalmic suspensions (Raab, 1972). Due to the currently increasing world-wide concern about the resistance of pathogenic bacteria against antibiotics it is discussed whether antibiotics used in food should be banned or its usage should be more restricted in the future. The addition of preparations containing pimaricin to cheese coatings based on polymer emulsions is still an important application in this industrial sector.
