Vaccines universality

Many states have developed universal immunization databases to document pediatric and adult vaccination status. This eliminates the problems of lost immunization records if a child changes health care providers. [Pg.1250]

Stephen Tuck is Vice President of Biopharmaceutical Development at Dynavax Technologies in Berkeley, California. He has over 14 years of experience in pharmaceutical chemistry. He was involved in the development of Fluad adju-vated flu vaccine as well as various subunit vaccines, adjuvants, vaccine conjugates, and protein therapeutics. He earned his B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Imperial College, University of London, United Kingdom. [Pg.1]

In addition to the chemotherapeutic approaches, the industry, again in collaboration with university colleagues, has been working on an effective vaccine for fhis disease. The history of viral disease has been one in which vaccines have been much more successful fhan chemofherapeutic agenfs, whereas, to date, the reverse is the case with AIDS. [Pg.469]

In the 1950s, Dr. Jonas Salk and Dr. Albert Sabin from the University of Pittsburgh (USA) worked on polio vaccines. Salk used inactivated polio virus, whereas Sabin developed a live form of polio virus. [Pg.199]

Researchers from the University of Maryland in Baltimore (Maryland), the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research in Ithaca (New York), and Tulane University in New Orleans (Louisiana) have performed the hrst human trial of edible vaccine. Potatoes were genetically engineered to produce a diarrhea-causing toxin secreted by the bacterium Escherichia coli. [Pg.378]

Jason Kindrachuk is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in the laboratory of Professor R. E. W. Hancock. Jason received his Ph.D. from the University of Saskatchewan in 2007 where his research focused on host and pathogen sensory systems. During his study he specially focused on TLR-9 receptor—ligand interactions and the interactions between host defense peptides and the PhoPQ two-component sensory system of Salmonella typhimurium. In 2008 Jason received the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Kin Canada Fellowship for his research in the area of alternative therapies for treatment of antibiotic- and multidrug-resistant bacteria. Currently his research is focused on the investigation of structure-activity relationships amongst natural and synthetic host defense peptides from the perspective of associated immunomodulatory activities and as well as vaccine formulation strategies. [Pg.215]

The study must be approved by the local authorities, and blood samples must be obtained from patients after informed consent in accordance with the declaration of Helsinki (34). The present study was approved by the Ethical Review Committee of University College Hospital Galway. Extreme care should be taken when handling human blood sample. The presence in the sample of at least hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and human immunodeficiency virus should be tested. If this is not possible, treat the samples as if they would be infected. The personnel handling the human blood samples should be vaccinated at least for hepatitis B, and they must follow all the health and safety procedures of their institution. [Pg.223]

This case was time consuming, yes, but the expenditure of time was minuscule, compared to the potential sequellae of bad treatment. In our experience, the upfront commitment to clear treatment planning and diagnosis is a universally effective vaccine against col-... [Pg.423]
