Utility costs composition

A low temperature of approach for the network reduces utihties but raises heat-transfer area requirements. Research has shown that for most of the pubhshed problems, utility costs are normally more important than annualized capital costs. For this reason, AI is chosen eady in the network design as part of the first tier of the solution. The temperature of approach, AI, for the network is not necessarily the same as the minimum temperature of approach, AT that should be used for individual exchangers. This difference is significant for industrial problems in which multiple shells may be necessary to exchange the heat requited for a given match (5). The economic choice for AT depends on whether the process environment is heater- or refrigeration-dependent and on the shape of the composite curves, ie, whether approximately parallel or severely pinched. In cmde-oil units, the range of AI is usually 10—20°C. By definition, AT A AT. The best relative value of these temperature differences depends on the particular problem under study. [Pg.521]

Thermoplastic composites can be classified according to use, cost, performance, or processing methods. In the following discussion of the chemistry of the resin systems utilized in composites, three classes are considered ... [Pg.35]

The cost of the B.E.S.T. system varies depending on waste composition, product requirements, utility costs, flow rate, and volume. Treatment costs, excluding final disposal costs, range from 90 to 280 per wet ton of waste feed (D13798Y, p. 3). [Pg.917]

Losses, or debits, are not difficult to define. They consist principally of utility costs, streams of unrecoverable materials, and lowered market value brought about by contaminants in the product. Debits peculiar to a process may vary with feed composition, catalyst activity, atmospheric conditions, and demands elsewhere within the plant, but feed rate generally exercises the greatest influence upon them. The purpose of... [Pg.225]

With increasing petroleum cost and environmental concerns, the composite industry is in need of an alternative source of fibers and polymers. Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer on the planet. Thus, harnessing cellulose fibers from the biomass for composite fabrication seems like a logical step [1,2]. Even though cellulose fibers, especially cellulose nano and micro fibrils, have excellent mechanical characteristics [3,4], these fibers are yet to reach widespread recognition in the composite industry. Other biomass natural polymers, such as hemicellulose, lignin, and various pectins, could also be utilized in composite fabrication. [Pg.459]

Ferroelectric Thin-Film Devices. Since 1989, the study of ferroelectric thin films has been an area of increasing growth. The compositions studied most extensively are in the PZT/PLZT family, although BaTiO, KNbO, and relaxor ferroelectric materials, such as PMN and PZN, have also been investigated. Solution deposition is the most frequentiy utilized fabrication process, because of the lower initial capital investment cost, ease of film fabrication, and the excellent dielectric and ferroelectric properties that result. [Pg.347]

Solution Figures 9.6-9.8 illustrate the hot composite stream, the cold composite stream and the pinch diagram, respectively. As can be seen from Fig. 9.8, the two composite streams touch at 310 K on the hot scale (300 K on the cold scale). The minimum heating and cooling utilities are 2,620 and 50 kW, respectively, leading to an annual operating cost of... [Pg.223]

The CHARMEN synthesis problem can be stated as follows Given a number Nr of waste (rich) streams and a number Ns of lean streams (frtiysical and reactive MSAs), it is desired to synthesize a cost-effective network of physical and/or reactive mass exchangers which can preferentially transfer certain undesirable species from the waste streams to the MSAs. Given also are the flowrate of each waste stream, G,, its supply (inlet) composition, yf, and target (outlet) composition, y/, and the supply and target compositions, Xj and jc for each MSA. In addition, available for service are hot and cold streams (process streams as weU as utilities) that can be used to optimize the mass-exchange temperatures. [Pg.233]

Suppose we change our attention from structures in which the driver is functional consideration alone to something like an automobile where cost is also extremely important. We can get the functional job done with other materials, like steel and aluminum and fiberglass in certain places and unreinforced plastic in others. Then, the question becomes can we make a material substitution that will enable us to compete with the cost of these other materials to do a job that with all the other materials we cannot accomplish That is a different kind of question, and then cost becomes an extremely important driver. And, as cost of advanced composite structures goes down, we can expect to see more and more utilization of advanced composite materials. [Pg.464]

Composite materials are ideal for structural applications where high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios are required. Aircraft and spacecraft are typical weight-sensitive structures in which composite materials are cost-effective. When the full advantages of composite materials are utilized, both aircraft and spacecraft will be designed in a manner much different from the present. [Pg.539]
