While we suspected that there are a total of nine variations in halichondrin A, we have not identified all of them, mostly due to issues regarding limited quantities. The antitumor activities of halichondrin have been clarified by in vivo experiments, and it appears to be a promising compound. However, toxicity has always been an issue. In a joint Japan-US science seminar on cancer research held in Hawaii in 1987,... [Pg.173]

The first critique of US science and technology poUcy rests upon an accusation of oligarchy, the second upon an accusation of ignorance. The premise of the first is that the majority should rule (or rule more than they currently do) the premise of the second is that scientists should rule (or rule more than they currently do). Having sketched the outlines of the US constitutional system as well as two critiques of our current practice, let me suggest the following points. [Pg.332]

Now consider some examples of the influence of sedimentation process upon PT sensitivity. Let us consider the application of fine-dispersed magnesia oxide powder as the developer. Using the methods described in [4] we experimentally determined the next characteristics of the developer s layer IT s 0,5, Re s 0,25 pm. We used dye sensitive penetrant Pion , which has been worked out in the Institute of Applied Physics of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Its surface tension ct = 2,5 10 N m V It can be shown that minimum width of an indication of magnesia powder zone, imbibed by Pion , which can be registered, is about W s 50 pm. Assume that n = 1. [Pg.615]

We wish to thank Dr M O Neill at the University of Hull for valuable discussions during the course of this work. One of us (RAJS ) was supported by an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research studentship. [Pg.685]

Medline covers primarily biomedical literature, containing more than 13 million citations (October, 2002) of articles from more than 4600 journals published since 1958 [18]. The database covers basic biomedical research, clinical sciences, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, pre-clinical sciences, and life science. Medline, a subset of PubMed, is a bibliographic database produced by the US Nationcil Library of Medicine (NLM). The database is available free of charge via SciFinder Scholar or PubMed [19]. [Pg.241]

In order to balance public domain science with a high quality commercial software product it has been necessary for us to reimplement almost every aspect of computational chemistry embodied in HyperChem. All HyperChem source code is written in C or C-t-t, specified, designed, and implemented by Hyper-Chem s developers. We have stood on the scientific shoulders of giants, but we have not used their FORTRAN code Thus, although we have had access to MOPAC and other public domain codes for testing and other purposes, HyperChem computes MINDO, MNDO, and AMI wave functions, for example, with HyperChem code, not MOPAC code. We have made the effort to implement modern chemical science in a modern software-engineered product. [Pg.158]

At almost the same time as the 1958 faculty meeting, the US President s Science Advisory Committee referred to universities attempts to establish a new materials science and engineering and claimed that they needed government help (Psaras and Langford 1987, p. 23). [Pg.4]
