Moreover, the oxidation of methional to ethylene has been proposed (Beauchamp and Fridovich 1970 Biaglow et al. 1997), and the formation of allantoin (Grootveld and Halliwell 1987 Halliwell et al. 1988) from uric acid as well as the imidazolone derivative from histamine (Ching et al. 1995) have been suggested as an index of OH action in vivo (Halliwell et al. 1988). 

Blood plasma of children with cystic fibrosis was found to have decreased TAC (by 16%) in spite of increased concentrations of ascorbic acid, uric acid, and thiol groups (L4). In another study TAC of children with cystic fibrosis was normal, but these children received vitamin supplementation in doses prescribed in international guidelines (a-tocopherol <10 years, 100 mg daily, and >10 years, 200 mg daily retinol 2.5 mg daily ascorbic acid 100-200 mg daily) (M2). Other authors found TAC values for nonhospitalized patients (1.40 0.20 mM) not different from laboratory control values (1.35 0.11 mM), but greater than values for hospitalized patients (1.09 0.17 mM). TAC in CF children correlated positively with anthropometric values (height, weight, body mass index) and pulmonary function (forced expiratory volume in 1 sec), but not with age (L3).

The serum uric acid concentration is an important index for clinical diagnosis of gout, leukemia, toxemia of pregnancy, and severe renal impairment. A number of enzymes are assayed in serum and urine for diagnostic purposes the more frequently used ones are discussed below. 

Xanthinuria is a rare hereditary disease characterized by a deficiency of xanthine oxidase (E C 1,2,3,2), which metabolized hypoxanthine and xanthine to uric acid. In Japan, two cases of xanthinuria have been reported. However, during the past two years, we have investigated four patients with hypouricemia, hypouricosuria and xanthinuria. In almost all of these patients, hypouricemia (less than 1,0 mg/dl) was the most important index information to make a definite diagnosis of this disorder. After clinical profiles of these four patients were described, an easy method of detection of xanthine oxidase activity from the duodenal mucosa was developed by the authors. Urinary oxypurine was also analyzed by high-pressure liquid chromatography, and the results are reported here.

Studies have demonstrated that the chemical composition of calculi can be partially determined by CT in vitro, but this differentiation is more complicated and less reliable in vivo (Hillmand et al. 1984 Mostafavi et al. 1998 Nakada et al. 2000 Alkadhi et al. 2007). Weaver et al. (2003) showed a significant interaction of worker age and kidney disease in effect modification for the relationship of serum uric acid levels to either bone Pb or PbB in a mixed cohort of Korean current and former Pb workers (N = 803). While negative data for exposure-kidney endpoint associations were determined for the entire group, the oldest age tercile showed worsening kidney disease (increased uric acid) with increased exposure indexed as bone Pb and PbB, while the youngest subset had evidence of hyperfiltration responses. 

The TJricolytic Index.—This is believed to represent the ability of the animal to destroy uric acid, and is expressed as the percentage ratio of the allantoin nitrogen to the sum of allantoin and uric acid nitrogen excreted.
