In a report prepared for the University of Michigan s Institute of Social Research, Paul Hirsch described the product of Adorno s Radio Research Project. (20) According to Hirsch, the establishment of postwar radio s Hit Parade "transformed the mass medium into an agency of sub-cultural programming." Radio networks were converted into round-the-clock recycling machines that repeated the top 40 "hits." Hirsch documents how all popular culture — movies, music, books, and fashion — is now ran on the same program of preselection. Today s mass culture operates like the opium trade the supply determines the demand. [Pg.373]

A number of pool, also called swimming pool, reactors have been built at educational institutions and research laboratories. The core in these reactors is located at the bottom of a large pool of water, 6 m deep, suspended from a bridge. The water serves as moderator, coolant, and shield. An example is the Lord nuclear reactor at the University of Michigan, started in 1957. The core is composed of fuel elements, each having 18 aluminum-clad plates of 20% enriched uranium. It operates at 2 MW, giving a thermal flux of 3 x 10 (cm -s). The reactor operates almost continuously, using a variety of beam tubes, for research purposes. [Pg.224]

In his 1980 dissent, Patterson warned that it is probable that (the middle) person is also poisoned with lead, but in more subtle ways that have not yet been disclosed. He called for the phase-out of lead mining, smelting, and manufacturing, a monumental crime committed by humanity against itself. Only two committee members, Cliff Davidson of the Carnegie Institution and Jerome Nriagu of the University of Michigan, endorsed Patterson s position. [Pg.195]

Some of the older polymer institutions grew, such as the rubber and polymer based institute at the University of Akron, which was formed in the 1940 s, and where Maurice Morton took the Directorship in 1954. Others remained essentially the same and still others slipped. "Brooklyn Poly", the center of academic polymer chemistry in the USA in the 1940 s and 1950 s remained as such but became less dominant because a number of their excellent staff left to found other institutes. For instance, Charles Over-berger, who rose to Dean of Science and Director of the Polymer Research Institute, left in 1967 to take the chairmanship of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Michigan where he helped found their macromolecular based institute. [Pg.134]

The Author thanks Professor Allen P. Mills, Jr., of the University of California at Riverside Drs. R. Suzuki and T. Ohdaira of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan Dr. Shu Yang of Bell Labs Dr. J. Maxam of Oak Ridge National Laboratories and Professor D. Gidley of the University of Michigan for their contribution and helpful discussions. We are indebted to Professor John P. Wolfe at the University of Michigan, and his students, Joshua Ney and Josephine Nakhla Professor Phil S. Baran at the Scripps Research Institute, and his students, Noah Z. Bums, Mike DeMartino, Tom Maimone, Dan O Malley, Jeremy Richter, and Ryan Shenvi for proofreading the manuscript. [Pg.10]

Richard J. Lewis, Sr., Division of Technical Service, The Industrial Hygiene Branch of The National Institute for Occupational Safety Health, had primary responsibility for the development of this recommended Standard. Although Lewis led the project, input was received from General Motors Corporation, Olin Corporation and Shell Oil Company, the Michigan Department of Health, The University of Missouri, and of course various offices and divisions of NIOSH. The work draws heavy upon NFPA s 704 system and CMA s LAPI Guide to Precautionary Labeling. The recommended colors follow NFPA, as do the three major hazard classes health, reactivity, and flammability. [Pg.420]

K. Reduction of unlawful adolescent drug use (as measured in terms of illicit drug use during the past 30 days by the Monitoring the Future (MTF) study of the University of Michigan or the National PRIDE survey conducted by the Parents Resource Institute for Drug Education) to 3% or less of the U.S. adolescent population by December 31,2003, and achievement of at least 20% of such reduction during 1999, 2000, 2001,2002, and 2003, respectively... [Pg.21]
