Units multiple

As CPU performance increases, the gap between CPU and disk and memory speeds will continue to widen. As limits of technology are approached, other techniques will be needed to gain performance advantages more functional units, multiple processors, and so on. These approaches are discussed in the sections on minisupercomputers and parallel processing. 

Flexibility of service and fuels are criteria, which enhance a turbine system, but they are not necessary for every application. The energy shortage requires turbines to be operated at their maximum efficiency. This flexibility may entail a two-shaft design incorporating a power turbine, which is separate and not connected to the Gasifier unit. Multiple fuel applications are now in greater demand, especially where various fuels may be in shortage at different times of the year. 

In many situations, the animal is both the experimental unit and the observational unit , but this is not always so. For determining treatment effects by the methods of the next section, it is important that each experimental unit provide only one item of data for analysis, as the methods all assume that individual data items are statistically independent. In many feeding studies, where the cage is assigned to a treatment, it is the cage, rather than the animal, that is the experimental unit. In histopathology, observations for a tissue are often based on multiple sections per animal, so that the section is the observational unit. Multiple observations per experimental unit should be combined in some suitable way into an overall average for that unit before analysis. 

Metalliferous sedimentary rock horizons occur as intercalated units between volcanic rocks of the 2.7 Ga Kidd-Munro assemblage (KMA) of the Abitibi subprovince, Canada (Hannington et al., 1999). The shale horizons are widely distributed within the KMA and commonly occur as carbonaceous (graphitic) and/or sulfidic argillaceous shale units. Multiple horizons may be present in any one drillcore, representing both primary depositional stratigraphy and subsequent fold repetition. 

Intramuscular injections have been shown to produce elevations in serum enzyme activities presumably due to either inflammatory areas in the muscle or actual breakdown of cells and release of enzyme. In one study, preinjection values of creatine phosphokinase were in the normal range of 24-100 units. Multiple intramuscular injections of penicillin, diuretics, and narcotics every 6 hours caused the creatine phosphokinase values to rise to levels between 160 to 240 units, or up to 2.5 times the upper limit of normal. When the injections were stopped, the creatine phosphokinase values returned to normal within 48 hours (B7). Similar observations of aspartate aminotransferase activities were made in patients receiving intramuscular injections of penicillin every 4 hours. Activities rose to values as high as 200 units. Other workers have reported injection related serum creatine phosphokinase elevations following intramuscular administration of chlorpromazine and suxamethonium (HIO, M11,T6).

The conventional representation of numbers using scientific notation is not always followed. For example, we might represent a bond length as 0.14x 10-9 m rather than 1.4 x 10-10 m if we were referencing it to another measurement of length given in integer unit multiples of 10 9 m. 

To express quantities much larger or smaller than the standard units, multiples or submultiples of these units are used, as shown in the Table 1-1. Thus, lO12 s is a picosecond (ps), and 103 m is a kilometer (km). Since for historical reasons the SI reference unit for mass, the kilogram, already has a prefix, multiples for mass should be derived by applying the multiplier to the unit gram rather than to the kilogram. Thus lO9 kg is a microgram (KT6 g), abbreviated pg.
