Definitions of municipal solid waste vary from country to country, making comparisons difficult. In fact, even within the United States, definitions vary from state to state. Furthermore, there are often considerable uncertainties in estimates of waste quantities. BioCycle Magazine, the other major source of information on the U.S. MSW stream, compiles information from surveys of state agencies. Because of differences in definitions and methodology, BioCycle s reports of MSW amounts routinely exceed those from EPA. In the most recent survey, BioCycle reported generation of municipal solid waste totaled 369.4 million tons in 2002 (after adjusting state-reported values to adjust for items such as imported and exported waste, and construction and demolition and industrial wastes), compared to 235.5 million tons reported by EPA that year. ... [Pg.476]

The final section of an issued patent is the claims, S. A United States patent is requited bylaw to have at least one claim. The claims lepiesent the legal definition and boundaries of the rights resulting from the patent grant. Patent claims are analogous to the legal description which one might find on a tide to real estate. [Pg.29]

No method has been devised to estimate with complete accuracy the amount of cmde petroleum that ultimately will be produced from the world s conventional oil and gas fields. Degrees of uncertainty, therefore, should be attached to all such estimates. These uncertainties can be expressed in several ways, the most important of which is achieved by dividing a resource into various categories. Several petroleum resources classifications have been proposed, and a comprehensive discussion of them (1), as well as the definition used in the assessment of the undiscovered resources of the United States (2), have been provided. Seven commonly used categories of resources are given here. [Pg.217]

Thermal treatment is used to destroy, break down, or aid in the desorption of contaminants in gases, vapors, Hquids, sludges, and soHds. There are a variety of thermal processes that destroy contaminants, most of which are classified as incineration. Incineration HteraHy means to become ash (from Medieval Latin, incinerare in or into ashes). With respect to the incineration of hazardous wastes regulated in the United States, however, there is a strict legal definition of what constitutes an incinerator. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) definition of incinerator at 40 CFR 260.10 is... [Pg.168]

In the United States, chocolate and cocoa are standardized by the U.S. Food and Dmg Administration under the Federal Food, Dmg, and Cosmetic Act. The current definitions and standards resulted from prolonged discussions between the U.S. chocolate industry and the Food and Dmg Administration (FDA). The definitions and standards originally pubUshed in the of December 6, 1944, have been revised only slightly. [Pg.89]

Special purpose coatings include those coatings that do not fit under the definition of architectural or product coatings. About 16% of the volume (6.1 X 10 m ) of United States coatings, value 2.62 biUion in 1990, falls into this category (1). [Pg.357]

This definition estabUshes the legal difference between a dmg and a cosmetic. It is clearly the purpose of, or the claims for, the product, not necessarily its performance, that legally classifies it as a dmg or a cosmetic in the United States. For example, a skin-care product intended to beautify by removing wrinkles may be viewed as a cosmetic because it alters the appearance and a dmg because it affects a body stmcture. [Pg.286]

Definitions. Physical and chemical agents that combat pathogenic and nonpathogenic microorganisms are often referred to as disinfectants. Attempts to standardize terminology by health agencies in the United States, such as the CDC, the Pood and Dmg Administration (PDA), and the EPA, have resulted in the following definitions. [Pg.120]

Following is a listing of typical nomenclature expressed in SI and U.S. customary units. Specific definitions and units are stated at the place of application in this section. [Pg.682]

For use in medicine, opium is dried, powdered and standardised to a definite content of morphine, which the British Pharmacopoeia 1932 places at 10 per cent, (limits 9-5 and 10-5), and the United States Pharma-copceia (XIII) at not less than 10 or more than 10-5 per cent. [Pg.176]

Extensive monitoring of the chemistry of precipitation is now available fi-om networks in both North America and Europe. Representative values of the major soluble species that account for most of the measured conductance of the samples at three United States sites are shown in (Table I) (77). It will be noted that the acidity, which is measured directly as pH, is due primarily to the presence of nitrate and sulphate ions that are not balanced by associated cations. While direct pH measurements are a valid measure of precipitation acidity, Reuss (18) has proposed that a balance of the principle ionic species, as in Equation 1 would provide a more appropriate definition of the acidity in relation to possible ecosystem responses. [Pg.38]

The advantages to using MSDSs for chemical inventories are that MSDSs are publicly available and required by law. There is no extra cost or labour needed to supply them. The limitations to using MSDSs as a source of inventory data are that currently, in the United States, a standardized reporting format is not mandatory. MSDSs are not verified or audited and MSDS information can be incomplete and/or inaccurate. In addition, OSHA s definition of hazard does not include the broader scope of hazard used in green chemistry. Therefore, chemicals that are potential hazards from the green chemistry perspective but are not defined by OSHA as hazards, are not required to be identified on a MSDS. [Pg.278]
