Sodium acetate reacts with carbon dioxide in aqueous solution to produce acetic anhydride and sodium bicarbonate (49). The half-life of aqueous acetic anhydride at 19°C is said to be no more than 1 h (2) and some other data suggests a 6 min half-life at 20°C (50). The free energy of acetic anhydride hydrolysis is given as —65.7 kJ/mol (—15.7 kcal/mol) (51) in water. In wet chloroform, an extractant for anhydride, the free energy of hydrolysis is strangely much lower, —50.0 kJ/mol (—12.0 kcal/mol) (51). Half-life of anhydride in moist chloroform maybe as much as 120 min. Ethyl acetate, chloroform, isooctane, and / -octane may have promise for extraction of acetic anhydride. Benzene extracts acetic anhydride from acetic acid—water solutions (52). [Pg.78]

Biorational approaches have proven useful in the development of classes of herbicides which inhibit essential metaboHc pathways common to all plants and thus are specific to plants and have low toxicity to mammalian species. Biorational herbicide development remains a high risk endeavor since promising high activities observed in the laboratory may be nullified by factors such as limitations in plant uptake and translocation, and the instabiHty or inactivity of biochemical en2yme inhibitors under the harsher environmental conditions in the field. Despite these recogni2ed drawbacks, biorational design of herbicides has shown sufficient potential to make the study of herbicide modes of action an important and growing research area. [Pg.39]

Standard Mosquito Repellents. Since its initial report as a promising repellent in 1954, DEET has been considered the best all-around repellent having generally acceptable characteristics, despite a continuing search for a superior chemical. Improvements include many commercial products with added cosmetic agents that use slow release technology, such as the U.S. Armed Services slow release 35% DEET formulation (16). There were 35 EPA-registered repellent products in 1994 that contained only DEET under different trade names (2). DEET is present in 192 of the 212 products mentioned previously (2). [Pg.114]

Sucralfate [54182-58-0] an aluminum salt of sucrose octasulfate, is used as an antacid and antiulcer medication (59). Bis- and tris-platinum complexes of sucrose show promise as antitumor agents (60). Sucrose monoesters are used in some pharmaceutical preparations (21). A sucrose polyester is under evaluation as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (mri) (61).
