Ultrasound extraction (sonication) is based on the conversion of AC current at 50/60 Hz into electrical energy at 20 kHz and its transformation in mechanical vibrations. Due to the cavity, microscopical vapor bubbles are formed and, after implosion, they produce strong shockwaves into the sample. For isolating the (semi)volatile organic compounds, the liquid-liquid ultrasound technique is applied to samples such as soils, sediments, coal, etc. The process is also useful for the biological materials destruction (Loconto, 2001). Sonication extraction is faster than Soxhlet extraction (30-60 min per sample) and allows extraction of a large amount of sample with a relatively low cost, but it still uses about as much solvent as Soxhlet extraction, is labor intensive, and filtration is required after extraction. [Pg.25]

Ionic liquid-based ultrasound-assisted extraction (ILUAE) was successfully applied to the extraction of three alkaloids, vindoline, catharanthine, and vinblastine from Catharanthus roseus. Twelve ionic liquids, with different cations and anions were investigated in this work. In addition, ultrasound extraction parameters, including soak time, solid-liquid ratio, ultrasound power and time, and the number of extraction cycles, were optimized. The most common method to extract xylan is the alkaline extraction. Several pretreatment methods can be used in association in order to break the covalent bonds that exist between xylan and other carbohydrates during the extraction (Wang Zhang, 2006). A number of articles studied the use of ultrasound on the xylan extraction. Hromadkova and coworkers reported that 36.1% of xylan was extracted from corn cobs with 5% NaOH solution at 60°C for 10 min of ultrasonication in comparison with 31.5% of xylan in the classical extraction. To compare their spectra and concentration of dissolved zinc in sonicated and control conditions, zinc-dithizone complex was formed by adding 0.5 ml of 0.005% dithizone solution.
