Immunogenic properties

The most common method to extract xylan is the alkaline extraction. Several pretreatment methods can be used in association in order to break the covalent bonds that exist between xylan and other carbohydrates during the extraction (Wang Zhang, 2006). A number of articles studied the use of ultrasound on the xylan extraction. Hromadkova and coworkers reported that 36.1% of xylan was extracted from corn cobs with 5% NaOH solution at 60°C for 10 min of ultrasonication in comparison with 31.5% of xylan in the classical extraction. Both extractive methods yielded xylan with immunogenic properties (Hromadkova et al., 1999).

In the early 1900s, a balanced mixture of diphtheria toxin and antitoxin was found to produce active immunity in both animals and humans. This preparation gained widespread acceptance and protected approximately 85% of recipients. Several years later, diphtheria toxoid was developed by treating the toxin with small amounts of formalin. This process caused the toxin to lose its toxic properties while maintaining its immunogenic properties. In the mid-1920s, the addition of an alum precipitate enhanced the immunogenic properties of the toxoid.

Finally it must be pointed out that in nearly all papers that have hitherto appeared the immunogeneous properties of the polymeric drugs have not been taken into consideration, although for long time it is already known that drugs linked to a carrier are able to act as antigenes (124).
