There have been major advances in the detection of carcinoma of the breast in the past several decades. The UK National Health Service (NHS) spending on drugs has been 9-11% per year (of the total cost) over nearly 50 years. 

It is difficult for us now to appreciate the naive fervour and trust in doctors that allowed them almost unlimited rights to prescribe (in the early years of the UK National Health Service founded in 1948). Beer was a prescription item in hospitals until, decades later, an audit revealed that only 1 in 10 bottles reached a patient. The Central and East London Breast Screeiung Service (CELBSS) at St Bartholomew Hospital, London, was the first screeiung unit in the UK National Health Service Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) to incorporate FFDM into routine screening. The study was carried out from January 2005 to June 2007 (Vinnicombe et al. 2009). In the population-based NHSBSP, women aged 50-70 years were invited for a two-view mammographic examination once every 3 years. 

A review conducted by Bleetman et al in 2003 also revealed that one third of the assault victims admitted to the hospital were injured by a knife. The majority of those knife injuries were slash-type injuries to the face, with fewer affecting the upper Umb and the trunk. Less than a quarter of fatal wounds caused by stabs are inflicted in the chest region and the distribution of the wounds suggests that, in real life attacks, most of knife assaults are slash attacks in the arm, neck, shoulder, and thigh regions. UK National Health Service (NHS) data suggests that, in 2010/11, there were 4643 people admitted to hospital as a result of assault by sharp objects. The number of admissions was more or less similar in the previous 10 years. Fig. 7.1 shows the percentage of assaults by injury location.

While the trend to include potentially harmful events is understandable, it is also rather unfortunate because the reporting of such events depends on how people have judged a situation rather than on what actually happened.
