Kenneth Poeppelmeier has published over 250 research papers and supervised approximately 40 Ph.D. students in the area of inorganic and solid state chemistry. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and has been a Lecturer for the National Science Council of Taiwan (1991), Natural Science Foundation of China (1999) and Chemistry Week in China (2004), and more recently an Institut Universitaire de France Professor (2003).

October Ten random persons are killed and three injured by Washington, D.C. -area anonymous snipers. The shootings, revealed later to have been done with a high-powered Bushmaster rifle by Lee Boyd Malvo and John Allan Muhammad, are used by gun control advocates to argue for extending and expanding the bans on such weapons. 

March 9 John Allan Muhammad, considered the mastermind behind the Washington, D.C.-area sniper killings in October 2002, is sentenced to death. The following day his young accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, receives a life sentence without possibility of parole.
