The previous section illustrated how to obtain the elastic properties of a unidirectional lamina. In practice considerably more information may be required about the behavioural characteristics of a single lamina. To obtain details of the stresses and strains at various orientations in a single ply the following type of analysis is required. [Pg.182]

The Plate Constitutive equations can be used for curved plates provided the radius of curvature is large relative to the thickness (typically r/h > 50). They can also be used to analyse laminates made up of materials other than unidirectional fibres, eg layers which are isotropic or made from woven fabrics can be analysed by inserting the relevant properties for the local 1-2 directions. Sandwich panels can also be analysed by using a thickness and appropriate properties for the core material. These types of situation are considered in the following Examples. [Pg.218]

One of the unidirectional flow system modifications is air supply through diffusers located above the occupietl zone. The supply air temperature is lower than the desired room air temperature in the occupied zone, and air velocity is lower compared to a mixing-type air supply, bur higher than for a thennal displacement ventilation. Polluted air of the occupied zone is suppressed by an tiverlying air cushion that displaces the contaminated air toward floor-level exhausts (Fig. ". 12). [Pg.441]

The foregoing are but examples of the types of mechanics of materials approaches that can be used. Other assumptions of physical behavior lead to different expressions for the four elastic moduli for a unidirectionally reinforced lamina. For example, Ekvall [3-2] obtained a modification of the rule-of-mixtures expression for and of the expression for E2 in which the triaxial stress state in the matrix due to fiber restraint is accounted for ... [Pg.135]

The flame propagation direction affects the type of flame arrester selected. An end-of-line or in-line deflagration flame arrester used for the protection of an individual tank may be of a unidirectional design because the flame will only propagate from the atmosphere towards the tank interior. A bidirectional flame arrester design, however, is needed for an in-line application in a vapor recovery (vent manifold) system because the vapors must be able to flow from the tank interior into the manifold, or from the manifold into the tank interior. Consequently, flame may propagate in either direction. [Pg.105]

From the qualitative analysis, Chan found that students mental models could be categorized into three types initial, synthetic, and scientific mental models (Fig. 11.4). The initial model refers to the static model, which had only solute dissolved into the solution and then stopped at the saturation point. The synthetic model refers to the coexistence of two models the unidirectional model and... [Pg.254]

The formulas derived in the time-independent framework can be easily transferred into the corresponding time-dependent solutions. The formulas in the time-independent linear potential model, for example, provide the formulas in the time-dependent quadratic potential model in which the two time-dependent diabatic quadratic potentials are coupled by a constant diabatic coupling [1, 13, 147]. The classically forbidden transitions in the time-independent framework correspond to the diabatically avoided crossing case in the time-dependent framework. One more thing to note is that the nonadiabatic tunneling (NT) type of transition does not show up and only the LZ type appears in the time-dependent problems, since time is unidirectional. [Pg.206]

The function of a neuron is to communicate or relay information to another cell by way of an electrical impulse. A synapse is the site at which the impulse is transmitted from one cell to the next. A neuron may terminate on a muscle cell, glandular cell, or another neuron. The discussion in this chapter will focus on neuron-to-neuron transmission. At these types of synapses, the presynaptic neuron transmits the impulse toward the synapse and the postsyn-aptic neuron transmits the impulse away from the synapse. Specifically, it is the axon terminal of the presynaptic neuron that comes into contact with the cell body or the dendrites of the postsynaptic neuron. Most neurons, particularly in the CNS, receive thousands of inputs. As will become evident, the transmission of the impulse at the synapse is unidirectional and the presynaptic neuron influences activity of the postsynaptic neuron only. [Pg.35]

Theoretically, all enzyme reactions are reversible but the overall flux (flow) of substrate in a pathway is unidirectional. To extend our road map analogy, this type of reaction acts as a control point in a pathway, rather like a one-way street, allowing substrates to flow in only one direction. [Pg.17]

A buccal drug delivery system is applied to a specific area on the buccal membrane. Moreover, the delivery system ean be designed to be unidirectional in drug release so that it can be protected from the loeal environment of the oral cavity. It also permits the inclusion of a permeation enhancer/protease inhibitor or pH modifier in the formulation to modulate the membrane or the tablet-mucosal environment at that particular application site. While the irritation is limited to the well-defined area, the systemic toxicity of these enhancers/inhibitors and modifiers can be reduced. The buccal mucosa is well suited for this type of modification as it is less prone to irreversible damage [9]. In the event of drug toxicity, delivery can be terminated promptly by removal of the dosage form. [Pg.194]

The concept of chemical transmission in the nervous system arose in the early years of the century when it was discovered that the functioning of the autonomic nervous system was largely dependent on the secretion of acetylcholine and noradrenaline from the parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves respectively. The physiologist Sherrington proposed that nerve cells communicated with one another, and with any other type of adjacent cell, by liberating the neurotransmitter into the space, or synapse, in the immediate vicinity of the nerve ending. He believed that transmission across the synaptic cleft was unidirectional and, unlike conduction down the nerve fibre, was delayed by some milliseconds because of the time it took the transmitter to diffuse across the synapse and activate a specific neurotransmitter receptor on the cell membrane. [Pg.15]
