Municipal wastewater treatment plants and the treatment plants for wastewater from some branches of the foodstuff industry have a fairy standardized structure. [Pg.246]

Of all coil coating plants in the U.S., about 36% of the plants pretreat their industrial effluents and directly discharge their pretreated effluents to the receiving waters, and the remaining 54% of the plants pretreat and discharge their effluents to the municipal wastewater treatment plants for further treatment. The following subsections describe the above subcategories.1-3... [Pg.266]

Because formaldehyde is the most toxic compound present in this kind of wastewater, to control its concentration in reactors is important in order to maintain the stability of the wastewater treatment plant. For this reason the following are recommended ... [Pg.776]

Wastewater characteristics must be known in order to select a suitable treatment system. For this purpose, the wastewater samples taken from the sources were analyzed to determine various parameters. Also, the quantities of chemicals (NaOH) required for neutralization and settling characteristics were determined. These were made separately for continuous and batch discharges. Since the system is to be designed according to the continuous discharge of wastewaters from the batch system to the treatment plant, mixed wastewater was prepared in quantities proportional to the flow rates. The quantity of NaOH required for lOOOmL of mixed wastewater is shown in Table 28.2.13... [Pg.1197]

The discharge from both domestic and industrial wastewater treatment plants (for example, from activated sludge processes) has been a low-cost source of makeup for cooling systems for many years. Efforts to reuse water continue to gain momentum for environmental conservancy and economic reasons, but the fact that secondary use waters are, by definition, of a lower grade than other supply sources inevitably means an increased risk of deposition or fouling problems in the cooling system. [Pg.29]

The present stu(fy shows that the coir pith carbon is an effective adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution. Adsorption follows Langmuir isotherm. Kinetic data follow second order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity was found to be 5.87mg/g. The results would be useful for the fabrication and designing of wastewater treatment plants for the removal of dye. As the raw material, coir pith is discarded as waste in coir industries, the treatment method using coir pith carbon is expected to be economical. [Pg.341]

Sulfur dioxide is widely used in water and wastewater treatment plants for dechlori-nating backwash water and wastewaters containing chlorine. It is a colorless gas with a suffocating pungent odor. Sulfite ion, which is formed when SO2 gas dissolves in water, reacts instantaneously with free and combined chlorine according to the following stoichiometry (13) ... [Pg.446]
