Treatment flocculation

Some polymers from styrene derivatives seem to meet specific market demands and to have the potential to become commercially significant materials. For example, monomeric chlorostyrene is useful in glass-reinforced polyester recipes because it polymerizes several times as fast as styrene (61). Poly(sodium styrenesulfonate) [9003-59-2] a versatile water-soluble polymer, is used in water-poUution control and as a general flocculant (see Water, INDUSTRIAL WATER TREATMENT FLOCCULATING AGENTs) (63,64). Poly(vinylhenzyl ammonium chloride) [70304-37-9] h.a.s been useful as an electroconductive resin (see Electrically conductive polya rs) (65). 

Polymers of N, N, N, A-diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) (and its copolymers with acrylamide) are allyl resins in terms of the monomers used but are very different in properties since they are not crosslinked. Cyclopolymerization is the mode of reaction (Sec. 6-6b) and the polymers are water-soluble. Applications include potable and wastewater treatment (flocculation aid) and paper and textile industries (antistatic coating, reinforcement, color removal).

Water-soluble and water-swelling polyampholytes are used in a wide number of applications including sewage treatment, flocculation, enhanced oil recovery etc. The desalination of water by cross-linked polyampholytes can be regulated by changing the temperature. Such polyampholytes are called thermoregenera-ble resins (TRR). To perform the thermoregeneration the next equilibrium should take place in dependence of temperature ...

Applications of Polyzwitterions. Polyzwitterions have wide-ranging applications. For example, statistical polyampholytes comprised of 2-vinylpyridine lOZ and acryhc acid IZ have been evalnated as desalination membranes, while others have been nsed in sewage treatment, flocculation, coagulation, drilling fluids, enhanced oil recovery, and drag reduction. 

With the advent of flotation as a useful treatment process in water and waste water treatment, made possible by the creation of finer bubbles by dissolved air precipitation, and electrolysis, the concept of bubble flocculation can be reconsidered. In the flotation process in water treatment, flocculation takes place prior to bubble flotation, usually by mechanical (paddle) flocculator with a coagulant salt (such as alum). It seems possible that the flocculation and flotation processes could be combined with the bubbles providing the flocculating power.
