Transmission UV-Vis

In a one-beam transmission configuration, as shown in Fig. 5.1, the user first places the reference sample (e.g., an empty cuvette or a clean support free of the absorber material of interest) in the path of the beam and performs a baseline scan. Afterward, the user replaces the reference sample with the working sample for measurement. The drawback to this method is the potential for drift and other [Pg.53]


The SAMs were formed using 11-mercapto undecanoic acid on ultrathin, optically transparent Pt films that made analysis by transmission UV/Vis spectroscopy easier. The carboxylic acid was converted to the acid chloride using SOCI2, and the resulting SAM of acyl chloride molecules was exposed to a solution of [RuII(NH3)5-4,4/-bipyridine](PF6)2 in DMF at 45° C for 20 h. The quaternized product is shown in Figure 5.11. Analysis indicated about 20% of the acid chloride moieties formed a complex. Biirgi (2005) described equipment combining attenuated total reflection IR with reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy. A fiber optical probe was positioned parallel to the surface normal of the internal reflection element in front of a fused silica window in the reactor. The distance from the probe to the catalyst layer was about 4 mm. A second fiber optical arrangement allowed simultaneous acquisition of transmission UV-vis spectra of the effluent liquid from the reactor cell. Homogeneous films of [M-TRP](CF3 SOJ) can be easily deposited on glassy carbon or ITO substrates, by dip-coating from a methanolic solution. The transmission UV-Vis spectra generally exhibit a broadened and less intense Soret band, probably due to exciton coupling with neighboring porphyrin rings. Table 5.5 shows the main characteristics of UV spectrophotometry as applied to polymer/additive analysis. Growing interest in automatic sample processing looks upon spectrophotometry as a convenient detection technique due to the relatively low cost of the equipment and easy and cheap maintenance. Transition metal oxides, rare earth oxides and various metal complexes deposited on their surface are typical phases of DeNO catalysts that lead to redox properties. For each of these phases, complementary tools exist for a proper characterization of the metal coordination number, oxidation state or nuclearity. Among all the techniques such as EPR [80], UV-vis [81] and IR, Raman, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and NMR, recently reviewed [82] for their application in the study of supported molecular metal complexes, Raman and IR spectroscopies are the only ones we will focus on. With the exception of single-crystal transmission work, most solids are too opaque to permit the conventional use of ultraviolet/visible (UV/VIS) electronic spectroscopy. As a result, such work must be performed through the use of diffuse reflection techniques [8-10]. Important work has been conducted in which UV/VIS spectroscopy has been used to study the reaction pathways of various solid state reactions. Other applications have been made in the fields of color measurement and color matching, areas which can be of considerable importance when applied to the coloring agents used in formulations. [Pg.5]

SnC>2 nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method using ethanol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran (THF) and ether as solvents. X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) have been used to study the crystallographic and morphological properties of synthesized SnC>2 nanoparticles, while their optical properties have been studied by UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy. UV-Vis absorption spectra shows a weak quantum confinement in all the synthesized SnCL samples. The photo-catalytic activity of as-synthesized SnC>2 nanoparticles under UV irradiation has been evaluated using Methylene Blue (MB) dye as a test contaminant in water. The results showed that solvents played a key role to control the morphology and photo-catalytic activity of SnCE nanoparticles. [Pg.88]
