I have chosen the five languages listed above simply because I have had some exposure to all of them over the years. Let me assure you that no politieal or nationalistic motives are involved. If you would prefer French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and Swahili, please feel free to make the appropriate substitutions My purpose in using the language metaphor is to try to break some of the psychological barriers that students have to such things as Laplace transforms and frequency response. It is a pedagogical gimmick that I have used for over two decades and have found it to be very effective with students. 

The initial assessment begins to establish the therapeutic alliance between the physician and the family. A working partnership with the parents and with the youngster is essential for comprehensive treatment and for compliance. The physician should be a collaborator with the child and family to empower them to effect improvements in their lives. Within this therapeutic alliance, the psychological power of medication treatment needs to be considered (see Chapter 33) to avoid the pitfall of assuming that medication alone will independently transform the identified problems. 

We can ask numerous questions that we don t have answers to yet about this information flow, not only general psychological ones as to how information passes from the unconscious mind to the conscious mind and what sort of transformations our unconscious processes work on information, but even more specific ones about whether psi information is processed in the same or a different way as sensory and memory information is in the unconscious mind. In the telepathic dream reported in Chapter 6, for example, there was a different feeling quality associated with this dream than with ordinary dreams. We also need to know what sort of conditions in the conscious mind can facilitate the flow of information from the unconscious, i.e., how do we draw out information from this normally inaccessible part of the mind What sorts of conscious conditions or actions minimize the distortion that seems to occur in the process Given that our direct, conscious use of psi is so poor, these are very important questions.

Further basic postulates deal with structures, those relatively permanent structures/functions/subsystems of the mind/brain that act on information to transform it in various ways. Arithmetical skills, for example, constitute a (set of related) structure(s). The structures of particular interest to us are those that require some amount of attention/awareness to activate them. Attention/awareness acts as psychological energy in this sense. Most techniques for controlling the mind are ways of deploying attention/awareness energy and other kinds of energies so as to activate desired structures (traits, skills, attitudes) and deactivate undesired structures.

So we have established that there were powerful interests behind the adoption of drugs as the principle form of psychiatric treatment and behind the transformation of views about drugs from chemical restraints to chemical cures. The question we now need to address is whether the evidence supports the idea that modern drugs are disease-specific treatments. Do psychiatric drugs deserve the prominence and respectability that they have now achieved And if the evidence does not suggest that they act on disease processes, then how do they act What are the characteristics of the psychological state they induce and how does this impact on normal mental functioning ... 

Huxley brought to bear a great deal of erudition in art, philosophy, mysticism, history and psychology. There is probably no better discussion of color transformation and the psychedelics ability to transport the user to what Huxley called "the Other World than in the book he published in 1955 entitled Heaven and Hell. 

Jung s work on the inner side of alchemy has been extremely influential, and the psychological/self help interpretation of the art has proved an extremely rich seam to mine. A visit to any bookshop will bear this out, with the proliferation of books entitled The Alchemy of... or taking the basic premise of transformation as the foundation upon which to build work upon the self. Indeed, alchemy seems to be at its most relevant and popular today in its inner, as opposed to laboratory, aspect. And yet it has to be remembered that alchemy is both an inner work and an outer work, and it is with this in mind that we shall end our brief survey of the art. 

Also known as John Isaac Holland, almost nothing is known about him. His work Of Natural and Supernatural Things was published in London in 1670, and stresses the importance of Saturn in the work. In psychological terms, it could be interpreted that he knew of the immense transformative power of negative experiences.

While the work of Carl Jung and others have underscored the archetypal power and universal significance of alchemical symbols, alchemy itself is much more than a psychological commentary on the nature of the human psyche. It is true that alchemy reflects the highest aspirations of the human soul, for our gold has always symbolized the hastened perfection of Man as well as matter. However, any alchemist worth his salt knows that lasting transformation only takes place when the work is accomplished on all levels of reality—the mental, the spiritual, and the physical. The Great Work is actual work to be done with the hands, the heart, and the soul, and not just understood with the mind.
