Tracking your results

Consequently, you ll want to closely track your operation s results in this area. But more than simply tracking your result, you will also want to gather as much information as possible about each driver turnover event. What happened What were the issues Could the driver have been saved What intervention steps were taken to try and save the relationship Is the driver eligible for rehire Getting answers to questions like these will help you better understand your driver turnover problem, and get closer to solutions. 

When you take measurements and use them to calculate other quantities, you must be careful to keep track of which digits in your calculations and results are significant. Why Your results should not imply more certainty than your measured quantities justify. This is especially important when you use a calculator. Calculators usually report results with far more digits than your data warrant. Always remember that calculators do not make decisions about certainty. You do. Follow the rules given below to report significant digits in a calculated answer. 

When you have a valid model in place, run as many simulations as needed, varying both the process and entity attributes to see how they affect the model. Some software allows you to watch the process in action during the simulation, although this will slow it down. Or you can let it run and track the resulting data both during and after the simulation. Either way, the longer you run the simulation, the larger the sample size will be and the closer to reality your results will come. 

Determine the entropy of mixing as a function of temperature, and sketch the resulting curve. Keep track of all approximations you make. Comment on your results. 

When you fail to measure, track, and communicate your results, you will not know what is and is not working. Fortunately, most areas of motor carrier safety are very measurable—vehicle accidents, cargo claim incidents, retention rates, regulatory compliance, etc. 

Until you track your accidents, their related costs, and the resulting injuries and illnesses, you have little baseline information upon which to lobby for better accident prevention, which can result in a multitude of benefits (see Figure 21.1). Some of these benefits are...

These examples are not very exciting - we have deliberately not used state-of-the-art pumps or components. However, the method works with your pump and materials - once you have characterized them. The only way to characterize them is to go through this exercise, keeping track of your results. At the same time, you will develop a sense for the variability that you will encounter. 

These areas are interrelated, and decisions about one affect the others. Also, decisions concerning these areas are not simply made once, never to be considered again. You should review each area periodically as intermediate results are developed to ensure that the QRA remains on track. Ignoring any of these areas diminishes the likelihood that your QRA objectives will be satisfied. 

Whether or not a team effort is feasible, defining goals for your efforts helps you stay on track, anticipate bottlenecks and obstacles, and assure that the end results reflect the real world of your particular company. 

Because of this, it s sensible to consider regular documentation as opposed to relying solely on oral reports or informal hallway updates. Even if your sponsors don t require much formal reporting, internal documentation of the group process can help keep the process itself on track and can also provide the foundation for documentation of the end results. 

Some BGE or sample components can adsorb strongly to capillary wall, resulting in permanent changes or very long equilibrium times. Therefore, keep track of your capillary s history, or better, dedicate the capillary to a certain method or BGE. Always check the final method conditions after method optimization on a fresh capillary. 

For an electronic resume to do its job correctly, it needs to be loaded with keywords that will result in your resume being selected when processed by a potential employer using applicant-tracking software. 

If you don t close a file before ending the program, you can run into big problems. A disk drive has its own microprocessor, which keeps track of open files. If you open a file, write to it, and turn off your computer without closing the file, the result is a "poison" file, which can corrupt other files on the disk. Poison files are marked in the directory with an asterisk. You should never scratch a poison file you have to use the Validate command to get rid of it. Before you end a program, be certain to close all files. 

By tracking the role of effective procedures in continuous improvement of operations and maintenance, you can identify and recognize a positive return on your investment. In addition to beneficial financial results, effective procedures are a vital component for achieving and maintaining yoru process safety, quality, and environmental goals.

Place 1-2 mg of the solid in each well and pulverize each sample with a stirring rod. Add 3-4 drops of a given solvent to the first well and observe whether the material dissolves at ambient temperature. If not, stir the mixture for 1.5-2 min and observe and record the results. Repeat this process with the chosen set of solvents, using a separate well for each solubility test. Keep track of which well contains which solvent.
