Air Toxics Issues in the 1990s. Policies, Strategies and Compliance." Air Waste Management Association, Pittsburgh, 1991. [Pg.426]

Since full analyses are carried out, a lot of data are generated. Every parameter is reviewed for trends that signal product aging or outright decomposition of the active principle this can be as cosmetic in nature as discoloration or as potentially hazardous as buildup of toxic derivatives. If the drug substance is an ester, for example, hydrolysis, particularly if moisture penetrates the primary packaging material, will decompose the compound into its acid and alcohol components. From a pharmaceutical or medical viewpoint, even if there is no toxicity issue involved, this will result in a loss of bioavailability. Even this is to be avoided because subpotency introduces therapeutic uncertainty and can go as far as lethal undertreatment. [Pg.246]

Many patients are turning to dietary supplements in an effort to take a more active part in the management of their health. Whether or not health care practitioners condone this practice, pharmacists must be familiar with these products. Pharmacists should be aware of the safety and toxicity issues surrounsding these products. They cannot afford to jeopardize patients trust and respect by dismissing the potential utility of dietary supplements. Rather, pharmacists need to encourage patients to be open and honest about their dietary supplement use so the highest degree of health care service may be provided. [Pg.743]

Additives used in the production of PVC are discussed with reference to the increasing pressure from environmental campaigners. In particular heat stabilisers and plasticisers are examined with data from the European Stabiliser Producers Association regarding market trends, materials substitution, and toxicity issues. [Pg.69]

The above described toxicity issues related to the usage of surfactants will be discussed in the following sections using three different surfactant types, which have been used abundantly in the past. These examples clearly demonstrate the way in which the behaviour and (ultimate) fate can be decisive elements for the success or failure of commercially marketed surfactants. [Pg.69]

Once the SWNTs were delivered to the tumor, they could be heated by laser irradiation to destroy the tumor. This group also noted that they did not observe any obvious toxicity in the mice when injected with SWNTs up to dosages of 2 mg/kg. However, they found that the rate of excretion of SWNTs was very low. Thus, longterm studies are needed to investigate toxicity issues (Liu et al., 2007). [Pg.296]

One of the major toxicity issues in cannabis consumption relates to the fact that it is most often smoked. Cannabis and tobacco smoke, apart from having different psychoactive constituents, are actually very similar in their composition (Hoffman et ai. 1975). Cannabis smoke is mutagenic, which gives it carcinogenic potential (Nahas and Latour 1992). Although no specific reports of lung cancer or emphysema from cannabis smoke exist, it is at least as harmful as tobacco smoke, containing three times as much tar and five times as much carbon monoxide (Wu et al. 1988). Cannabis smoke inflames the airways and reduces respiratory capacity. Airway obstruction and squamous metaplasias may also occur. [Pg.437]

U se of a known low-toxicity scaffold (drug) for building molecular specificity was the most important advance, permitting us to overcome toxicity issues due to the large doses required to treat almost a pound and a half of the in vivo receptor (hemoglobin). When in doubt as to which molecule to forward as a clinical candidate, consider metabolism and toxicity profiles as well as biological activity. [Pg.480]

In addition to the toxicity issues associated with pesticide use, there are also reactivity concerns when they are used in urban areas. For example, chloropicrin (CC13N02) is used as a soil fumigant. It absorbs light in the actinic region (Moilanen et al., 1978 Carter et al., 1997), decomposing with a quantum yield of 0.87... [Pg.929]

BFM and St. Jude protocols, are that on BFM protocols no topoisomerase 11 inhibitors are given in close association with thiopurines and, finally, that on BFM protocols no intrathecal triple therapy (methotrexate, cytarabine, and a glucocorticoid) are given concurrent with cranial radiotherapy and 6-MP. Another important toxicity issue associated with TPMT status relates to the above-described VOD-like symptoms of the liver in childhood ALL patients treated with 6-TG on the British MRC ALL97 trial (209). In this trial, TPMT activity was significantly lower in children in whom VOD developed while no differences in RBC 6-TGN levels were described. This information in association with ongoing research efforts will help to develop a better understanding of 6-TG-associated liver toxicity and may help to identify those individuals upfront who should not be administered 6-TG. [Pg.190]
