Derwent Information Ltd. Derwent Information Ltd., previously known as Derwent PubHcations Ltd., changed its name in the 1990s to reflect more accurately the fact that its products go far beyond traditional pubHcations. As a set of minimum standards, ISO 9000 addresses the business community. It was intended for purchasers as a means for them to obtain products and services of consistent quality from their suppliers. In place of purchaser-specified general quality management requirements, ISO 9000 became the common requirement and hence eliminated the need for such requirements. As a consequence, it provides suppliers that meet its requirements with a demonstrable capability that others may not possess and hence such capability becomes a persuasive marketing tool that will increase market share. ISO 9000 was also intended for application to all types of industry and therefore did not contain requirements for any specific industry sector or type of products or services. Partially due to the scope of misinterpretation and the degree to which particular industries have common supplier requirements, certain industry sectors perceived the need for harmonizing such requirements in a form that added to those requirements in ISO 9000. [Pg.4]

In addition to products and service which are incorporated or which form part of the products and service supplied to customers, there are tools, test equipment, contract labor, facilities, calibration services, computer services, and many other items which, if not of adequate quality, may adversely affect the quality of the products and service you supply. These items should also be governed by these requirements. [Pg.307]

Throughout the present treatment, we have been stressing the use of statistical techniques and control charts. This does not imply that control charts can change processes or solve the problems. They are tools that provide a road map to assist in solving problems at a low cost to products and services. It is people working in conjunction with these tools that change and Improve the processes. [Pg.347]

In recent years pharmacoeconomics has been used as a term to describe the identification, measurement and comparison of the costs and consequences of pharmaceutical products and services (Bootman et al 1996). As such, pharmacoeconomics focuses primarily on pharmaceuticals, and attempts to evaluate the economic and humanistic impact of drug therapy. Pharmacoeconomic tools are derived from a variety of sources, including the fields of economics and outcomes research. Quite often the pharmacoeconomist will bring to the development team skills and experience in quality of life, patient satisfaction and other patient-centered measures. Health economists and a pharmacoeco-nomists differ (while the terms are sometimes used interchangeably), in having stronger backgrounds in the theoretical and applied aspects of health economics, respectively. Several models, tools, and techniques are available for improving the quality of products and services and managing the total quality leadership process. Greene (1993) reviewed quality practices in lapan and the United States and claims to have identified about 24 dimensions of total quahty management (TQM). Edosomwan (1998a) identified several TQL tools summarized in Table 3 for improving quality and performance at the individual, work-unit, and organizational levels. [Pg.1798]

System safety tools and techniques currently used primarily in the aerospace, weapons, and nuclear industries offer great potential for meeting these challenges. The systematic application of system safety fundamentals early in the life cycle to produce first time safe products and services can provide significant, cost-effective gains in the safety effort in transportation, manufacturing, construction, utilities, facilities, and many other areas. [Pg.402]
