Tobacco prevention

The tobacco prevention movement has also included the mobilization of community groups in the effort. The American Legacy Web site has hnks to organizations in 32 states. Some (but not enough) states have used tobacco settlement money to fund prevention efforts. For example, in my home state (Nevada), there is a grant competition each year for tobacco prevention and treatment proposals from community-based organizations.

Given that there is strong evidence for a genetic component to tobacco addiction the identification of genes that may be responsible for this link leads to exciting new opportunities to help people to withdraw from nicotine and to prevent relapse. 

The most widely studied therapeutic proteins produced in plants include monoclonal antibodies for passive immunotherapy and antigens for use as oral vaccines [40]. Furthermore, it has been estimated that the cost of antibody production in plants is half that in transgenic animals and 20 times lower than in mammalian cell cul-... 

Every patient who uses tobacco should be offered at least brief treatment. All patients attempting tobacco cessation should be offered practical counseling (problem-solving/skills training), social support, stress management, and relapse prevention.
