TME element

Uranium [7440-61-17 is a naturally occurring radioactive element with atomic number 92 and atomic mass 238.03. Uranium was discovered in a pitchblende [1317-75-5] specimen ia 1789 by M. H. Klaproth (1) who named the element uranit after the planet Uranus, which had been recendy discovered. For 50 years the material discovered by Klaproth was thought to be metallic uranium. Pnligot showed that the uranit discovered by Klaproth was really uranium dioxide [1344-57-6] UO2, and obtained the tme elemental uranium as a black powder in 1841 by reduction of UCl [10026-10-5] with potassium (2). [Pg.313]

TME elements (Fig. 12.27) are formed from pitch-less rings with the same outer diameters as the screw diameter and with holes milled around their circumference. The holes can be located to form positively conveying, backward pumping, or neutral conveying elements. Trialkyl- and triarylarsine sulfides have been prepared by several different methods. The reaction of sulfur with a tertiary arsine, with or without a solvent, gives the sulfides in almost quantitative yields. Both trialkyl- and triarylarsine selenides have been reported. The trialkyl compounds have been prepared by refluxing trialkylarsines with selenium powder (140). The preparation of triphenylarsine selenide [65374-39-2], C gH AsSe, from dichlorotriphenylarsorane and hydrogen selenide has been reported (141), but other workers could not dupHcate this work (140). [Pg.338]

Despite many publications on carbynes, their existence has not been universally accepted and the literature has been characterised by conflicting claims and counter claims [e.g., 27-29]. This is particularly tme of meteoritic carbynes. An interesting account of die nature of elemental carbon in interstellar dust (including diamond, graphite and carbynes) was given by Pillinger [30]. Reitmeijer [31] has re-interpreted carbyne diffraction data and has concluded that carbynes could be stratified or mixed layer carbons with variable heteroelement content (H,0,N) rather than a pure carbon allotrope. [Pg.8]

Mendeleev was bolder in his interpretation than Lothar Meyer, and for this reason we honor him as the primary discoverer of the modem periodic table. A few elements did not fit the pattern of variation in combining numbers with molar mass. Mendeleev proposed that these irregularities meant that the element s molar mass had been measured incorrectly. For example, Mendeleev predicted that the correct molar mass of indium is 113 g /mol, not 75 g /mol, the value assigned at that time on the assumption that the formula for indium oxide is InO. This is particularly tme for the trace elements. Laboratory leaching studies vary in the experimental conditions used (e.g., the type and concentration of the extractant solution, the L/S ratio, and other parameters such as temperature and duration/ intensity of agitation), and therefore may not adequately simulate the weathering environment (Rai et al. 1988 Eary et al. 1990 Spears Lee, 2004). [Pg.650]
