Vestibulocochlear effects Ginkgo has positive effects on vestibulocochlear function in animal models, primarly through vasoactive and antioxidant mechanisms. EGb 761 dilates the cochlear vasculature and prevents flow reduction caused by sodium salicylate (Didier et al. 1996). Oral EGb 761 reduced tinnitus induced by sodium salicylate in rats (Jastreboff et al. 1997). The recovery of balance after unilateral vestibular neurectomy is accelerated by postoperative treatment with EGb 761,... [Pg.167]

Vertigo and tinnitus are difficult to treat conditions for which ginkgo is frequently recommended. At least two trials support the use of gingko extract for vertigo, but the evidence for tinnitus remains inconclusive. [Pg.790]

C. Ginkgo would be the most likely herbal treatment to benefit this patient, since it would improve cerebrovascular blood flow and cognitive function. Vertigo and tinnitus may also respond, although there is more evidence for the former. GarUc is traditionally used for cardiovascular benefits (Upid, blood pressure reduction), but it would be unlikely to produce immediate results. Peppermint is used as an antispasmodic in irritable bowel syndrome, while ginger tea is a common carminative (gas reducer) and motion sickness treatment. Valerian is useful as a sedative. [Pg.797]

The recommended dosages of an oral standardized dry extract of ginkgo (24% ginkgo flavonol glycosides and 6% terpene lactones) are 120 to 240 mg daily for dementia and memory impairment, and 120 to 160 mg daily for intermittent claudication and tinnitus. Adverse effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, diarrhea, vomiting, allergic reactions, pruritus, headache, dizziness, and nose bleeds. [Pg.112]

Ginkgo has been studied for its effects in allergic and asthmatic bronchoconstriction, short term memory in healthy, non-demented adults, erectile dysfunction, tinnitus and hearing loss, and macular degeneration. In none of these conditions is the evidence sufficient to warrant clinical use at this time. [Pg.1358]
