The therapeutic indications for BoNTs are numerous. They are used in the treatment of ophthahnological disorders (strabismus, Duane s syndrome, esotropia/exotropia), movement disorders (focal dystonias, blepharospasm), spasticity, neiuomuscular disorders, pain (headache, myo-facial pain), disorders of the pelvic floor (anal fissures), ear/ nose/throat disorders, cosmetic applications (wrinkles), and hyperhidrosis. The recent explosion in new indications for BoNTs in the treatment of a wide range of medical conditions also brings the possibihty for medical errors in BoNT dosing. Systemic botulism may result from injection of excessive doses of the potent neurotoxin. The most infamous case of systemic botulism involved the paralysis of four Florida patients, including the doctor, treated with BoNTs for wrinkles. The physician used non-FDA approved formulations of type A from Toxin Research International,... [Pg.411]

Seven children taking niflumic acid for ear, nose, and throat disorders for 1-5 days developed acute renal insufficiency due to immune interstitial nephritis oedema, oliguria, or anuria occurred at 3-6 days (2). There were signs of hypersensitivity (fever, skin rash, eosinophilia, and/or increased IgE) in all cases, leukocyturia in five, and hematuria in six. Renal biopsy showed interstitial lesions with infiltrates of lymphocytes, eosinophils, and plasma cells, but no tubular cell necrosis. In two patients renal insufficiency was irreversible despite the use of methylprednisolone. [Pg.2523]

Inhalation death occurs within 10 minutes, primarily a result of dry land drowning in which the lungs and throat fill with mucus, blood, and dead tissue, causing asphyxiation. Two milliliters of pure liquid lewisite absorbed by a 150-pound adult by any means would likely be fatal. Those who survive exposure may continue to show symptoms including pulmonary edema, neural disorders, subnormal body temperature, low blood pressure, and permanent damage to the endocrine system for an indefinite period.1... [Pg.82]

Phenol can have beneficial effects when used for medical reasons. It is an antiseptic (kills germs) when applied to the skin in small amounts and may have antiseptic properties when gargled as a mouthwash. It is an anesthetic (relieves pain) and is a component of certain sore-throat lozenges and throat sprays or gargles. Small amounts of phenol in water have been injected into nerve tissue to lessen pain associated with certain nerve disorders. Phenol destroys the outer layers of skin if allowed to remain in contact with skin, and small amounts of... [Pg.26]

The onset of botulism occurs generally between 18 and 36 hours after consumption of food products containing botulin toxin. However, it may affect patients earlier or later, even on the tenth day after food consumption. The first symptoms include stomach ache, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, followed by neurological disorders. Other symptoms include, skin, mouth and throat dryness, diplopia, blurred vision, dysphonia, dysarthria, dysphagia, and peripheral weakness. In lethal cases of botulism, respiratory muscles are involved. This leads to respiratory failure and death. Because all the symptoms are connected with toxemia, the first step of medical treatment is to provide a patient with antiserum. [Pg.201]
