Third Market Environment

Two market environments have now passed, and a third arguably is still under way with biotechnologies changing how we contend with all aspects of health care. The decades since 1950 have demonstrated that Indian production of generic medicines, diagnostic kits. [Pg.197]

In 1980, approximately 111,000 t of synthetic organic dyestuffs were produced in the United States alone. In addition, another 13,000 t were imported. The largest consumer of these dyes is the textile industry accounting for two-thirds of the market (246). Recent estimates indicate 12% of the synthetic textile dyes used yearly are lost to waste streams during dyestuff manufacturing and textile processing operations. Approximately 20% of these losses enter the environment through effluents from wastewater treatment plants (3). [Pg.384]

A third and more recent example of where readily biodegradable surfactants have replaced surfactants that are more long-lived in the environment is the taking over of the market for textile softener surfactants by the ester quats from the stable quats. This transition is still in progress today but for several years the big soapers all base their softener formulations for the US and Western Europe markets on ester quats instead of traditional, stable quats. The change from stable quats to ester quats is probably the best example of the concept of introducing a cleavable bond in a given surfactant structure because the two types of products are very similar in structure and physical chemical charac-... [Pg.59]

Chemical reactions enhanced by catalysts or enzymes are an integral part of the manufacturing processes for the majority of chemical products. The total market for catalysts and enzymes amounts to 11.5 billion (2005), of which catalysts account for about 80%. It consists of four main applications environment (e.g., automotive catalysts), 31% polymers (e.g., polyethylene and polypropylene), 24% petroleum processing (e.g., cracking and reforming), 23% and chemicals, 22%. Within the latter, particularly the catalysts and enzymes for chiral synthesis are noteworthy. Within catalysts, BINAPs [i.e., derivatives of 2,2 -bis(diphenylphosphino) -1, l -bis-l,l -binaphthyl) have made a great foray into chiral synthesis. Within enzymes, apart from bread-and-butter products, like lipases, nitrilases, acylases, lactamases, and esterases, there are products tailored for specific processes. These specialty enzymes improve the volumetric productivity 100-fold and more. Fine-chemical companies, which have an important captive use of enzymes, are offering them to third parties. Two examples are described here ... [Pg.114]

A 1982 Gannett poll showed that newspaper readers rated natural disasters and tragedies as most popular, with local and national economic stories as second and third. Stories about the environment, energy or conservation ranked seventh. There are no risk stories in the top ten, not the risk of economic depression or even the risk of an air diaster. The news is the actual stock market crash, or hijacking. Even a meeting is more likely to be considered news than is a risk story. [Pg.162]

Surprisingly, in the era of globalization and virtual worlds, a physical place is still important for members of a creative community. [A physical place] facilitates the matching of creative people to economic opportunities, says Florida (2002). Creative production requires frequent intersections between individuals, and these still occur mostly through social interactions. For such interactions to occur, a complex urban environment has to be created with places for mingling and gathering such as bookstores, coffee or pastry shops (my favorite), small restaurants, and farmers markets. In other words, creative people need a third place to enjoy life in addition to the primary places of home and work. The availability of third places is very important for the members of the creative class, and it is often the decisive factor when they are considering job offers in several locations. [Pg.57]

The discipline-specific tools that are used in the horizontal line of the V model already are part of today s tools landscape in the companies and can be considered as provided. However, the communication of these stand-alone tools is to be ensured though the use or implementation of appropriate connectors and enterprise architecture. The most aforementioned functions are available in tools that are on the market as stand-alone, but there are integrative platforms that propose environments that comprise many of the relevant functionalities. They are often equipped with interfaces that enable the integration of selected third party tools. The decision, whether an integrated environment or many stand-alone tools are to be connected depends on the company s SE strategy and the importance of the... [Pg.233]

Historically, there has been no duty on users of electrical equipment in flammable atmospheres to select equipment that has been approved or certified for use in such environments. The duty on employers, under the Health and Safety at Work Act, section 2, and the Electricity at Work Regulations, Regulation 6, has been to select equipment that is safe, so far as is reasonably practicable. However, guidance published by the HSE and others is that the best way of ensuring compliance is to use equipment that has been approved or certified against published standards by an appropriate test body. Similarly, suppliers of such equipment have been advised to ensure that their products are tested by an independent third party against the relevant standards before placing them on the market. [Pg.264]
