Creative communication

From a public policy perspective, creative regions are much more than merely geographic areas they are creative communities. A creative community can be interpreted as a community wherein knowledge is created and processed. A description of such a community obviously covers any community producing inventions and providing engineering education as well. Therefore, the concept of a creative community and its descriptive features are important for us also in our quest to create a successful environment that is perfect for the inventors and for the education of inventive engineers. [Pg.56]

As a result of many years of research, Florida has identified four distinctive features of a creative community. They include (1) a physical place, (2) diversity, (3) authenticity, and (4) identity. [Pg.57]

Surprisingly, in the era of globalization and virtual worlds, a physical place is still important for members of a creative community. [A physical place] facilitates the matching of creative people to economic opportunities, says Florida (2002). Creative production requires frequent intersections between individuals, and these still occur mostly through social interactions. For such interactions to occur, a complex urban environment has to be created with places for mingling and gathering such as bookstores, coffee or pastry shops (my favorite), small restaurants, and farmers markets. In other words, creative people need a third place to enjoy life in addition to the primary places of home and work. The availability of third places is very important for the members of the creative class, and it is often the decisive factor when they are considering job offers in several locations. [Pg.57]

All the features of a creative community are important for truly creative activities to occur. Imagine if you were in such an environment as you pursue your inventive work. Would you feel and be more creative, inventive, and even confident if you were surrounded by creative people and environments Perhaps you live in such a place right now. If so, think about how your creative environment enhances your overall sense of well-being, ability to focus, and creative inspiration. [Pg.59]

Creative communication concerns the composition of messages for a variety of informational purposes and is a component found to some degree throughout all facets of mass media. Writers of all kinds, graphic artists, photographers, designers, illustrators, and critics have the ability to influence behavior through the use of words or pictures. [Pg.377]

During the 28th International Symposium on Combustion in 2000, Irvine Classman spoke about the importance of research in the area of combustion science to modem society in his Hottel Lecture. In his message he appealed to the combustion community to contribute to the solution of real issues and to be more creative in solving economic, social, and environmental problems. [Pg.2]

This book summarises the enormous work done and published by many scientists who believe in polymer analysis. It is humbling to notice how much collective expertise is behind the current state-of-the-art in poly-mer/additive analysis and how little is at the command of any individual. The high degree of creativity and ingenuity within the international scientific community is inspiring. The size of the book shows the high overall productivity. Even so, only a fraction of the pertinent literature was cited. [Pg.1]

Twenty years ago the dislike of traditional treatment may have presented some real challenges. Today, however, there are many more treatment alternatives to which a client can be referred to if she or he would not match well with a traditional treatment facility. A good referral might be to a psychologist or other therapist who practices cognitive behavioral therapy for individuals. In addition, the advent of the Internet era allows for new and creative treatment alternatives even for people in small communities. [Pg.115]

Board certified in family practice and environmental medicine, Erica Elliott, M.D., has a private practice and lives in an adobe-style cobousing community surrounded by cacti, footpaths, and creative energy on the edge of Santa Fe. [Pg.52]
