Thinking global, acting local

At the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm, 1972), Rene Dubos, advisor to the conference, authored the now popular maxim Think Globally, Act Locally. It is solutions at a local level that can help resolve the global environmental concerns faced by all of us today. 

Since 1987 and the publication of the Brundtland Report by the World Conunission on Environment and Development, a new phrase has become the slogan of our contemporary societies sustainable development (Brundtland 1987). The ideas covered by this new concept were not entirely original, but the expression and the definition proposed in the UN report dissraninated widely. Since the Rio Summit in 1992, sustainable development has become a global canse and the phrase think globally, act locally , the new mantra of the late twentieth century.

They think locally and act locally, but their collective action produces global behavior. Take the relationship between foraging and colony size. In this chapter, we examine the environmental chemistry associated with both global and local issues. One goal of this chapter is to provide a balanced perspective on the subject. This in turn should help the reader use chemistry to make informed decisions about environmental issues. An axiom of the environmental movement is to think globally and act locally. While both global and local issues will be treated separately, the nature of having an enviromnen-tal perspective means knowing that local decisions made by many individuals cumulatively have global consequences.

Mangan et al. (2008) cite McDonald s as an example of the "Think Global, but act local" strategy. In addition to selling its world products (burgers, French fries, coca-cola, etc.) in all its world-wide outlets, McDonald s also sells locally desired products. McDonald s India has established close cooperation with hundreds of Indian farmers to feed its "French fries" supply chain because cows are sacred in India, "beef patties" have been replaced by "Iamb patties "... 

As time ticked on, life kept electrons and ejected oxygen, the Earth oxidized, some metals were locked up, and others were released. New metabolic wheels and new chemical fuels became available. But we have to think local before we act global. Oxidation of a corner of the world had to take place before the world could oxidize. With the help of the sun, a powerful new oxidative chemistry emerged, like a small, warm mammal in the cold shadow of the nickel-using dinosaurs.
