Society sustainable development

Since 1987 and the publication of the Brundtland Report by the World Conunission on Environment and Development, a new phrase has become the slogan of our contemporary societies sustainable development (Brundtland 1987). The ideas covered by this new concept were not entirely original, but the expression and the definition proposed in the UN report dissraninated widely. Since the Rio Summit in 1992, sustainable development has become a global canse and the phrase think globally, act locally , the new mantra of the late twentieth century.

The chemical industry views sustainable development as a challenge put before all parts of society. This chapter is meant for developers and designers of processes, in particular of intensified processes, who want to ensure that their processes contribute to sustainable development. The problems facing civilization and its development are so broad and multifaceted that the aspects considered here are but a small part of the wider field of scientific and methodical studies of the processes involved in the interation between nature and society. The proposed adaptive evolutionary scheme of combining monitoring data with the results of simulation modeling may turn out to be a mechanism to facilitate the transition to sustainable development.
