A wide variety of thermoplastics have been used as the base for reinforced plastics. These include polypropylene, nylon, styrene-based materials, thermoplastic polyesters, acetal, polycarbonate, polysulphone, etc. The choice of a reinforced thermoplastic depends on a wide range of factors which includes the nature of the application, the service environment and costs. In many cases conventional thermoplastic processing techniques can be used to produce moulded articles (see Chapter 4). Some typical properties of fibre reinforced nylon are given in Table 3.2. [Pg.171]

Polyesters are one of the most versatile classes of polymers ever produced, covering a wide range of properties and applications. Polyesters are present in fibers, engineering thermoplastics, and high-performance polymers as well as in thermosetting resins and elastomers. The primary crystalline polymer based on CHDM is the terephthalate, poly(1,4-cyclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate) (PCT). This polyester was originally developed for fiber applications but has since found wider utility as a reinforced polymer for injection molding and (when copolymerized with a small amount of isophthalic acid) as a material for crystallized food packaging trays. The key property of PCT which sets it apart from other thermoplastic polyesters in these latter applications is its melting point. [Pg.273]

Poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) is a semicrystalline, thermoplastic polyester which is completely analogous to PET except that it has a longer, more flexible butylene chain linkage which imparts a rapid crystallization rate, thus making PBT well suited to injection moulding processes. The moisture resistance properties of filled molding compounds are enhanced by the treatment of the fillers with silane adhesion promoters prior to compounding. Silane promoters on wollastonite fillers in thermoplastic polyester molding compounds (50 percent filled) will improve the flexural strength after 16 h in 50°C water by as much as 40 percent.
