Streptokinase is a 48 kDa extracellular bacterial protein produced by several strains of Streptococcus haemolyticus group C. Its ability to induce lysis of blood clots was first demonstrated in 1933. Early therapeutic preparations administered to patients often caused immunological and other complications, usually prompted by impurities present in these products. Chromatographic purification (particularly using gel filtration and ion-exchange columns) overcame many of these initial difficulties. Modern chromatographically pure streptokinase preparations are usually supplied in freeze-dried form. These preparations (still obtained by non-recombinant means) often contain albumin as an excipient. The albumin prevents flocculation of the active ingredient upon its reconstitution. 

Regular exercise, a healthy and balanced diet, and a clean environment are central to this process. Supplementation by safe and efficient antioxidants in the food chain or in therapeutic preparations should be a material aid to this desirable outcome.

A therapeutic preparation of colloidal silver is known as collargol. Crede s ointment also contains this form of silver, and is employed in the treatment of certain types of septic infection. Benzoic acid also has a long history of use as an antifungal agent in topical therapeutic preparations such as Whitfield s ointment (benzoic acid 6% and salicylic acid 3%).

INDICATIONS FOR THE USE OF ELEMENTAL DIETS. These products are therapeutic preparations which are employed for the treatment of patients with conditions that make feeding with ordinary types of foods unadvisable. Furthermore, they are much more expensive than other dietary formulas. Hence, the decision to give a patient an elemental diet should be made only by a doctor, although an experienced dietitian can usually provide considerable guidance in the selection of the appropriate product. 

Nicotinic acid is easily converted to nicotinamide in the body. In large amounts, nicotinic acid acts as a mild vasodilator (as a mild dilator of blood vessels), causing flushing of the face, increased skin temperature, and dizziness. Since nicotinamide does not cause these unpleasant reactions, its use is preferred in therapeutic preparations. 

Proteins are inherently nnstable and may produce degraded forms which are harmful when used in treatment of human diseases. On the other hand, protein-based therapeutic preparation are the fastest growing ikw drags nnder development. This calls for use of aggregation suppressing additives which rednce risk of instability.
