The trucking industry

The trucking industry has convinced some states that a tractor trailer can haul two cargo units on interstate highways. The result is that each truck driver can transport twice as much per man-hour. The interstate highway system itself has sped up trucking service. 

We will have better knowledge. Systems, such as the Automated Car Identification system of the American Association of Railroads (previously described in the Rail Transportation section), have a good chance of being extended to the trucking industry through the efforts...

The heaviest amount of the traffic department s work is with the sales department. But it must also work closely with the corporation s executive, production, purchasing, and research and development departments, as well as with accounting, treasury, advertising, and publicity. Economic lO analysis accounts for direct (within the sector) and indirect (within the rest of the economy) inputs to produce a product or service by using lO matrices of a national economy. Each sector represents a row or a column in the lO matrix. The rows and the columns are normalized to add up to one. When selecting a coluum (industrial sector P) the coefficients in each row would tell how much input from each sector is needed to produce 1 worth of output in industry P. For example, an lO matrix might indicate that producing one dollar worth of steel requires 15 cents worth of coal and 10 cents of iron ore. A row of matrix specifies to which sectors the steel industry sells the product. For example, steel might sell 0.13 to the automobile industry and 0.06 to the truck industry of every dollar of revenue. 

Section 405 of the Surface Transportation Assistance Act was enacted on January 6, 1983, and provides protection from reprisal by employers for truckers and certain other employees in the trucking industry involved in activity related to commercial motor vehicle safety and health. Secretary of Labor s Order No. 9-83 (48 Federal Register 35736, August 5, 1983) delegated to the Assistant Secretary of OSHA the authority to investigate and to issue findings and preliminary orders under Section 405. 

Finally, the institutional structure of the transportation industry plays an important role. The major competitors to the railroads all use publicly provided infrastructure. The successful development of the trucking industry as a competitor to railroads was dependent on the development of a modem highway system. Though vehicle accidents are the headline-grabbers of this industry, on-the-job injuries deserve just as much attention. Like vehicle accidents, personal injuries and illnesses are an unfortunate and costly reality, especially in the trucking industry. In fact, government statistics tell us that truck drivers consistently suffer more occupational injuries and illnesses requiring days away from work than any other industry in the private sector. As if vehicle accidents weren t enough to worry about.

Driver apprenticeship While the word may conjure up images of plumbers or tool-and-die makers, the concept of an apprenticeship is a simple one that can certainly be implemented in the trucking industry. 

High driver turnover has become so firmly entrenched in the trucking industry that many carriers simply consider the cost of driver replacement to be a fact of life — a cost of doing business. But, ultimately you get what you accept.

Workers have the right to expect safety and health on the job without fear of punishment. The use of motor fleets and bus transportation has increased rapidly during the last four decades. As a matter of fact, trucks transport most of the tonnage moved from one section of the country to another. The trucking industry has enabled all aspects of agriculture to expand their spheres of contact. Recent safety records of buses and trucks have been markedly better than those of previous years based on a number of reasons, such as the certified driver license (CDL) and effective training and educational safety programs for drivers. 

Training rooms should have blackboards, projectors, and any other aides that an instructor will find useful for students. The room can have many uses meetings and conferences can be held there, and it can serve as a display area for important material that companies want to make available to drivers (for instance, they can read up on the latest news in the trucking industry). 

The trucking industry needs to address the issue of overturned tractor-trailers and other highway incidents. Motor carrier and transit operators need to spend a great deal of time on highway safety, focusing on the driver and the general public. 

As a result of the events of September 11, 2001, in New York City and Washington, D.C., security services have expanded operations in all aspects of motor fleet safety and security. For many years, the trucking industry has worked to improve the security of trucking operations. In the aftermath of the terrorist activities, the transportation industry is expanding its security to include prevention of the use of its own vehicles and cargo (containers of explosive or combustible materials) as weapons in a terrorist attack.
