The environmental issues

The human health and environmental issues associated with nickel-cadmium batteries arise mainly from the ultimate disposal of the spent batteries. In general, occupational exposures to and manufacturing wastes and emissions from nickel, cadmium, cobalt and other materials in NiCd battery production are well regulated and controlled. There is virtually no danger of nickel or cadmium exposure during normal use of NiCd batteries. Even when NiCd batteries are disposed of in landfills, there is little danger of risk or exposure, at least in the short to mid-term, to nickel or cadmium from the battery s electrodes since they are always encased in at least two layers of steel or plastic or both. [Pg.106]

In 1989, Franklin Associates published a report under contract to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on the sources of lead and cadmium in municipal solid waste (MSW) that clearly identified NiCd batteries as a major source of cadmium. Based on this report, which later proved to have exaggerated the NiCd [Pg.106]

Previously, the U.S. EPA had specifically promulgated regulations that exempted used lead acid batteries from the regulatory burdens of RCRA in order to facilitate the already well-established recycling of automotive batteries. As a result, lead acid batteries enjoyed a recycling rate of better than 95%. NiCd batteries, however, were not included in this earlier scheme, and at the time the TCLP test was initiated, its potential impact on NiCd batteries was not recognized and no provisions were made to facilitate their recycling. [Pg.107]

As class discussions relate textbook topics to the environmental issues, students become aware of the difficulty of applying what they have learned in class to more complex situation. Although frustrate by the absence of simple right answers, students can be taught to appreciate the process by which scientists evaluate data and adjust hypotheses. [Pg.468]

It is important that students begin their study of acids seeking answers to questions that interest them. This may be accomplished by assigning relevant readings or having students research the topic in the school libra. Students should be made aware of the environmental issues related to acid deposition at the beginning of the acid/base unit. [Pg.468]

Observing a brown gas dissolve in water to form an acidic solution has greater relevance to a high school audience when the observation is related to the global problems of atmospheric pollution and acid precipitation. The environmental issues mean more to the students for having seen the demonstrations. [Pg.470]

This is part of the environmental issues series of the UK Environment Agency. The report provides an overview of plastics looking at manufacture, uses and disposal. The aim of the report is to make recommendations on ways to ensure that society s use of plastics is more sustainable in the future. [Pg.33]

Worldwide, the taxation and payments for resources and emissions are devised in such a manner as to make it more profitable for the manufacturer to resolve the environmental issues in-plant, rather than to shift them off to the consumer area. A combination of sanctions with economic incentives for a cleaner production will make the latter not a recipient from, but rather a donor to the government budget.Yet even domination of a cleaner economy policy will not soon guarantee survival of the population under a deep economic crisis like the current one. The anthropogenic damage already caused to nature may prove too heavy and not lending itself to repair within the life span of one or even more generations. [Pg.31]

In view of the environmental issues and operational simplicity, heterogeneous catalytic systems have been suggested to be advantageous. Gibson and co-workers first introduced polymer-bound cobalts 27 and 28 to this end." Subsequently, Portnoy and Dahan immobilized cobalt on dendrimeric phosphane ligands, which have a partial structure of 29 (Figure 6)." ... [Pg.344]

Reductive elimination and storage of dilute NOx has been an important technology to achieve cleaner exhaust gas from engines. At present, Pt, Pd and Rh are often used for the so-called three-way catalyst. The demand for a high-performance DeNOx catalyst with low cost and non-harmful materials is growing as the environmental issues expand worldwide. [Pg.205]

Carbon capture and sequestration is a technology that is being explored to curb the anthropogenic emission of C02 into the atmosphere. With the environmental issues and energy crisis problem associated with greenhouse gas effect being more and more prominent, CO2 capture-fixation-conversion has been a worldwide hot topic for sustainable development [1-12]. [Pg.41]

Additionally, the environmental issue of utilizing waste cellulosic material and waste biomass products should be considered as an alternative green chemistry application to the production of many value added products. The combinatorial utilization of carbohydrate scaffolds based on chiral building block functionalization will also constitute attractive and relatively cheap starting materials. This rich selection of potential approaches, combined with further developments of new procedures and modem reagents, creates an enormous opportunity for the field to be at the frontier for many years to come. [Pg.16]

The choice of the values of X and Y, which have long-term consequences, requires consideration of the conflicting problems of sustainable national economy and world environmental threat. The economy issues stem from such needs as the increase in electricity supply and the reduction of petroleum import. The environmental issues stem from such desires as the abatement of global emission of greenhouse gases and local emission of smog-forming vehicle exhaust. [Pg.323]

The environmental issues are providing an exciting opportunity for R D to make a significant contribution, not only to the health of the local community but also the financial health of the company. Some of the major areas for study by R D are catalytic solutions, solvent replacement, novel reactors, such as microreactors, as well as considering the product design carrying out life cycle assessments and the use of alternative feedstocks. This area has become known as Green Chemistry [D-6]. [Pg.224]

Most of the examples used in this chapter emphasize assessment models that can afford to incorporate conservative assumptions. Most deal with the environmental issue of nuclear waste disposal. This emphasis should not be taken to suggest that the literature is not replete with many other examples of valuable corrosion models. It is hoped that this chapter will encourage the reader to search for them. [Pg.207]

On several occasions during the past few years, you have studied the environmental issue of acid rain. Now that you have further developed your understanding of acids and bases in this chapter, reflect on your earlier understandings. [Pg.407]

Solvents have the advantage that they serve as a relatively inexpensive means with which to deliver a functional material to a substrate. One of the major drawbacks in the use of solvent inks are environmental issues. The environmental issues are both workplace related lists of volatile organic compounds that have restricted concentrations in the workplace, and broader concerns as expressed in regulations such as the Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPS) hst that limits the amounts of specific compounds that can be emitted by an operation. In response to these concerns, many inks are now marketed with an environmental twist. [Pg.157]

Figure 11.3 shows the electric power generation by fuel type in the U.S. Notice that -50% of electricity is produced from coal in the U.S. As natural gas prices increase, more power generation will rely on coal. To deal with the environmental issues of today s coal power plants, more IGCC plants with or without C02 capture could be built in the U.S. in the foreseeable future. [Pg.451]
