Terphenyl plasticizer

HB-40. [Monsanto] Partially hydrogenated terphenyl plasticizer extender, polymer modifier, resin solvator for vinyl sheeting, films, fabric or paper coatings, vinyl protective coatings, adhesives. 

The small amount of mixed terphenyls that are sold as such, are shipped in the form of flaked soflds in 22.7 kg multiwall bags. The U.S. freight classification is Plastics, synthetic other thanflquid, NOIBN. Like biphenyl, mixed terphenyls fall under the ha2ardous chemical criteria of the OSHA Ha2ard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200). 

Other Plasticizers. Acetyl tributyl citrate is an outstanding nontoxic plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride in food packaging Plastisol formulations containing this ester have exceptional viscosity stability. Acetyl triethyl citrate is a good plasticizer for the cellulosics and acetyl trioctyl citrate shows promise with vmylidene chloride polymers. Other compounds of diverse nature find application as plasticizers. These include tetra-w-butyl thiodisuceinate, camphor, o-nitrobiphenyl and partially hydrogenated isomeric terphenyls... 

There are three common types of organic scintillator. The first type is a pure crystalline material, such as anthracene. The second type, the liquid scintillator, is the solution of an organic scintillator in an organic liquid, such as a solution of p-terphenyl in toluene ( 3 g solute/L solution). The third type is the solution of an organic scintillator, such as p-terphenyl, in a solid plastic, such as polystyrene. 

Plastic scintillators are also mixtures of a solvent and one or more solutes. The most frequently used solvents are polysterene and polyvinyltoluene. Satisfactory solutes include p-terphenyl and POPOP. The exact compositions of some plastic scintillators are given in Ref. 10. 

OTHER COMMENTS terphenyls are important industrially as chemical intermediates in the manufacture of nonspreading lubricants, as heat transfer fluids, and as nuclear reactor coolants are also used as constituents of waxes and polishes, and as plasticizers for resin-bodied paints para-terphenyl has been used as a component of sunscreen lotion the terphenyls are considered a non-significant industrial hazard due to their low vapor pressure. 

Aromatic benzenoid hydrocarbons are important raw materials for the chemical industry, allowing the manufacture of plastics, fibers, strong textiles and a large variety of other products. However, aromatic benzenoid hydrocarbons as such do not have many uses, especially since some of them (benzene, benzanthracene, benzopyrene) are proved carcinogens. One of the few uses involves a mixture of meta- and / ara-terphenyl which has such a high thermal and radiolytical stability that it can be used as moderator and heat transfer fluid in organic-moderator ...

A typical construction sealant base composition contains 35-50% LP polymer. Chlorinated terphenyl or chlorinated paraffin were formerly included as an extender to lower cost at little sacrifice in elastomeric properties. Polychlorinated terphenyls have been used extensively in sealants, hydraulic fluids, electrical equipment, plasticizers, and paints because of their desirable electrical and flame-retardant properties [8]. The Monsanto Chemical Co. started the production of both PCTs and PCBs in the United States in 1929. Since then, PCTs have also been produced in France, Italy, Germany, and Japan.
