Thelephoric add (7.21) is a further oxidation product that is widespread amongst the Basidiomycetes. The delocalization of the phenolate anions forms the basis of the colour reactions that are observed when the fruiting bodies come into contact with alkali. The quinhydrones of corticins A (7.22) and B and their quinones give rise to the blue colour of Corticium caeruleum. The terphenylquinols are powerful anti-oxidants. [Pg.133]
