The Texaco gasifier and a similar unit developed by The Dow Chemical Company are pressurized entrained gasifiers. At the top pulverized coal is mixed with reaction gas and is blown down into the gasifier. The reaction products leave from the side, and ash is blown down to a water pool where it is quenched. These units have operated at an Eastman Kodak facUity in Kingsport, Tennessee and at the Coolwater power station in California for an integrated combined cycle power plant. 

Eastman Chemical Company has operated a coal-to-methanol plant in Kingsport, Tennessee, since 1983. Two Texaco gasifiers (one is a backup) process 34 Mg/h (37 US ton/h) of coal to synthesis gas. The synthesis gas is converted to methanol by use of ICl methanol technology. Methanol is an intermediate for producing methyl acetate and acetic acid. The plant produces about 225 Gg/a (250,000 US ton/a) of acetic anhydride. As part of the DOE Clean Coal Technology Program, Air Products and Cnemicals, Inc., and Eastman Chemic Company are constructing a 9.8-Mg/h (260-US ton/d) slurry-phase reactor for the conversion of synthesis gas to methanol and dimethyl... 

Endrin is no longer manufactured in the United States. Velsicol Chemical Company, Memphis, Tennessee, was the producer of endrin until the final voluntary cancellation of registration with the Office of Pesticide Programs in 1991 (Bishop 1984, 1985, 1986 EPA 1983e USDA 1995). It is estimated that 2.3-4.5 million kg (5.1-9.9 million pounds) of endrin were sold in the United States in 1962, while less than 450,000 kg (990,000 pounds) were produced in 1971 (IARC 1974). More recent estimates of domestic production of endrin could not be found (HSDB 1995). As with many toxic chemicals, information on production or use of pesticides is often proprietary, and quantitative estimates of production of endrin are virtually impossible to obtain (Bason and Colbom 1992). Chemical manufacturers in the United States however, can legally produce pesticides for export that are currently banned or not registered for use in the United States (FASE 1996). No information on the production of endrin was available from the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) because endrin is not one of the chemicals that facilities are required to report (EPA 1995a).

Facilities producing sodium cyanide and their annual capacity (in millions of pounds) include Cyanco Co., Winnemucca, Nevada (28) Degussa Corporation, Theodore, Alabama (60) Du Pont Chemical Company, Memphis, Tennessee (250) and Texas City, Texas (100) and FMC Corporation, Green River, Wyoming (60) (SRI 1995). 

Four companies operating five facilities appear to be the primary U.S. producers of DEHP. These are Aristech Chemical Company in Neville Island, Pennsylvania Hatco Chemical Company in Fords, New Jersey Teknor Apex Company in Brownsville, Tennessee and Hebronville, Massachusetts and Tennessee Eastman Company in Kingsport, Tennessee (Mannsville Chemical Products Corporation 1999). SRI (1998a), however, lists only Tennessee Eastman and Aristech Chemical Company, as above, but also adds Velsicol Chemical Corporation in Chestertown, Maryland, which was not included in the above list. 

Caution Conoentrated butyllithium may ignite spontaneously on exposure to air or moisture. Manipulations with this reagent should be performed with oare.
